Money Paid into my account that I wasent expecting!

I've just got my bank statement and over 2 days I have been given the sum of £2,800 (roughly) from a name i've never heard of, assume it's a company but not much on google to back that up.

What's the legal standpoint on things like this? is there anything stopping me from taking all the money out, shutting my account down and opening up another one somewhere else to safeguard me keeping the cash?

had a crappy christmas, i'm not confident that they will just leave that money there, but i can but dream!, maybe it's santa's bank transfer? :rotfl:

advice?

p.s. i seem to remember someone saying if they havent re-claimed in 6 months its mine?

    6 years. Not months.

The money is not yours. If it was a mistake by the bank it will be taken back without informing you. If it was accident from someone else you'll have to wait and see. They may take it back at some point, could be months.

The money is not yours therefore you cannot spend it. Search the forum for other similar topics.

This happened to boy where I live.

Except it was about 20 grand.

He blew it all, then 1 year later the bank came knocking and said it was a mistake.

Got taken to court, the lot, now he has a big chunk of his pay taken every month to pay it back.

Put it in an instant access savings account and pocket the interest.

best advice is stick it in the highest interest rate savings account (with the same bank) you can in the expectation of having to give it back -

if you do do that though, watch out for the bank taking it anyway and then trying to charge you unauthorised overdraft

I know somebody who got a 9 month prison sentence for spending £23k credited to his account in error.

(Or was it 18 months and he served 9?).

Thanks, yeah i'm not short of cash in that account anyways so not like i'm in need to spend it, but there was a 1% hope that someone would just say 'you lucky sod, its yours, enjoy the holiday' haha

I guess i'll report it in the new year :( pah!

I wouldn't bother. If its the banks mistake they'll take it when they realise. If its not the banks mistake, telling them wouldn't do anything as they wouldn't do anything about it.

I had a large sum put into my account (over £30K). I didn't touch it as it would have been theft BUT when they did call me (about 7 months later) they tookback the original sum only not the interest.

Which made me a profit of £500+ Nice.

They have to ask you for it back though, of course you have to give it but only give the sum they sent you incorrectly.
