Wine in my laptop

I had a bit of a disaster last night and ended up with wine in my laptop:eek:. It 'works' in that it turns on, and I can browse using the touch pad, but the keys either don't type at all or type completely the wrong letter (on employers PC now). Is this likely to be fixable do you think, or will I need to find the money for a new one?

Thanks

Blimey - if it's all the keys maybe you have damaged the circuits? There would probably be nothing lost then in trying to remove some of the keys and have a clean (plenty of advice on net).
Other than that you would have to weigh up the cost of a repair against the basic worth of the machine and the cost of a new laptop.
ps would it be covered on your house insurance?

Maybe it just needs to sober up :D

Sorry, couldn't resist - I would say you need to remove the power lead and battery to avoid doing any further damage, then try and clean it up. You will probably need to remove the keyboard, and clean it with something like alcohol (not wine) wipes. Best to google for your make/model and service guide to see how to do it.
  • I think the safest thing to do is take it to your nearest store that deals with these things. Make them check it up- telll you what exactly is wrong and whether it is fixable..
  • I have found a spare keyboard so at least I can use it for now. I tried removing one of they keys but now it won't go back on:rolleyes: so I won't try any more!

Sadly I don't have insurance at all so I can't claim on it. I think I will wait until the repair shop reopens next week and ask for an estimate. I haven't had the laptop long, but it was the cheapest Argos had, so depending on the estimate I might just need to replace it.

Who ever imagined sleep walking would be expensive??

Worst case scenario, is probably a new keyboard, a few screws, and clip it into the motherboard, easy to do yourself, no need for a new laptop.

Removing the plastic keys won't help, the problem will be sticky wine on the circuit board underneath, remove the battery, power, and keyboard and have a look inside.

I wouldn't have a clue how to do this myself, any 'ball park' idea what it would cost? The laptop only cost £280 in the first place!

    Thanks again

Ooops, sorry - I'm not only thick, I'm also now fuzzy brained with a cold, not really a good day!

    Its ASUS X58LSeries

    Celeron M575
    120GB HD
    1024MB memory
    Running Vista basic

    Is that what I needed??

    Once again, thanks

Not as expensive as the person who bought my laptop off me and always used it in bed until he got up one morning and stepped on the thing ;p
