Selling Your Stuff on Amazon Part 13 - Advice for newbies in first two posts
Currently selling a book on Amazon for the bog standard 1p plus postage earns the basic seller (non-pro) £1.46 after all fees.
So anything thicker than a large letter and it's no money (and making at least £1.14 loss). Even a large letter, if it weighs over 250g than your making 6p before the cost of packaging, 100-250 is a mere 36p (before other costs).
Add on the sellers on ebay/Play whom can undercut the £2.81 charged on Amazon, than it just isn't really worth it
Thanks for the replies, think I will have a look at the listings again, I was going to ask just how some people are pricing their books, when with postage costs they are running at a loss unless the book is thin, especially with the new postage prices and sizes.
Pro sellers can afford to sell the occasional item at a loss, they can earn on ads in postage and advertise other stock they have. I've actually just started selling an item on Amazon that can run at a small loss/just break even, I advertise my website and pick up other sales from it.
I've stepped up selling on Amazon over the last few months, it is very different to Ebay for a seller. As with anywhere it isn't easy and isn't for everyone, if you are prepared to put the research in and work out what sells best then you can do ok.
I'd say for smaller sellers if you are struggling to compete with pro sellers, just don't. It is free to keep an item listed, so put it on for the price that will make you a profit and don't undercut anyone. If it's a popular items the pro sellers will sell out some time and then yours will be the next in line.
