Chasing bill 2 years later

By ex boyfriend and i were joint account holders with South East water from when we were living together between 2006 - 2008. It is only now that South East Water decide that they didn't receive any payment from us and are still outstanding £420!!!! I know we paid our bill off before leaving the property to go our separate ways, each time i paid the bill each quarter i called the company directly and gave them my card details to take payment.

As it's been over 2 years i can't remember 100% how much i was paying each payment and i don't have any proof. I'm currently waiting for my bank to send me my statements covering 2006 - 2008 so i can track any proof down. The company also informed me that they are currently trying to track my ex down for the other half of the bill

The lady who called me from the water company blatantly admitted that it was their fault i hadn't received ANY warning letters regarding this outstanding amount before and it has taken them till now to let me know; do i happen to have any consumer rights on this issue by any chance?

Thanks

    Welcome to the forum.

Are you saying that SE water are stating that they didn't receive any payment from you for the whole time you were in the property, or didn't receive sufficient payment?

Even if you find proof of what you paid SE Water it doesn't mean that you don't owe them £420.

If you were metered your bills could have been calculated using estimated meter readings.

Did you write to SE Water and tell them that you were leaving on xx date and give a forwarding address.

You have no 'consumer rights' if your account was not paid in full - even if it was the water companies fault; they have up to 6 years to claim from you.

Obviously if you did pay the bill in full, then you are in the clear.
