It won't be 100% efficient as some heat will go up the chimney, assuming the figure you give is for input power then when fully on it will consume 4.4 Kw per hour. How much that will cost depends on your gas tariff.
I pay around 3.7pence per kwh for my gas so your heater would cost a maximum of around 16 pence an hour.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Thanks for that penrhyn , I will check my fuel suppliers prices in the morning. I shouldnt lose too much heat going up the chimney as its being fitted on the hearth and the flue will go through a metal plate and up the chimney , and I suspect the actual stove will get very hot and hold heat beings its cast. , but thanks for your helpful information. :T

Hello, Dont know whether someone out there can help me please. Right weve got the fire up and running by Gas safe man and got it resistered with them.

On my original first post here I asked if anyone knew roughly what it would cost per hour to run , well in between 4 o clock this afternoon and 5 o clock I put the fire on full for that hour , the metre read at 4 clock 8732 3. When 5 o clock got here I checked the metre and it read 8732.5 ?? :confused:do that seem right In that hour I never used any other gas appliance , the metre red pointer was going round but all be it very very slow rate. can anyone explain or am I not doing it properly.:confused:The fire is a 4.4 kw. Thanks

I assume your gas meter is a metric meter(it will have M3 on the face).

You have used 0.2 of a gas unit so approx 2.2kWh.

If you have an Imperial gas meter( it will have Ft3 or Cu Ft on face) it will have used approx 6.2kWh.

So for every gas unit used it will be approx 31.5kWh and cost around £1.

Do you have pilot lights on your other appliances? They could have used a little.

Okay thanks alot for your very helpful reply. No in between 4 and 5 oclock I turned the gas heating off and apart from that we have a rangemaster without pilot light, do you think it is reasonable useage for a 4.4 kw stove per hour ? thanks

Do gas fires have both an input and an out put rating like boilers?
Possibly your stove has a heat output rating of 4.4 Kw, but what is the input rating?
Has it got an efficiency rating A, B ,C etc?

Okay penryn this is what info ive found on the side of fire. Villager charlecot .
    input 4.4
    Pressure 20 mb
    Efficiency class 2.
Ive done a quick scan of the instruction book , probaly if I checked villager website there may be more info , also ive found the serial num,ber but I havent written it down cos I dont think that will help us. thanks

This appears to be your stove:

    http://www.firesonline.co.uk/acatalog/Villager_Charlecote_Gas_Stove.html

It has an output of 3.34kW and an efficiency of 77% which ties up with the input of 4.4kW(well close enough)

So according to your meter you used approx 6.2kWh for something that in an hour should only have used 4.4kWh.

I think it would be best to check it out over a much longer period - say 10 hours.

The problem is that although you can check the input, it is not possible to check the output.

However if after a long test it still appears to be using far more than the rated input, it will be worth calling the manufacturer.

I don't have any knowledge about how the flue etc might affect efficiency.
