Used many and found this to be the best.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0007R6CGC/202-3252780-3870225?v=glance&n=560798&s=electronics&v=glance

And it says "Made in Japan" on the thing if that's any help. The Western Digital in your link is also good (and cheaper from Amazon).
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

western digital make good hard drives, but unlike a lot of computer stuff hard drives dont tend to have bad makes... i mean, western digital are certainly one of the better brands, but your unlikely to have any trouble with any brand new hard drive. Thanks, I bought the Western Digital one from Amazon (nearly fell into the 'it's from ebay, so it MUST be cheaper' trap!). Thanks for your help.

The phrase "10 foot barge pole" springs to mind.

Personally, after too many years in the IT industry, I have become wary of the reliability of Western Digital disks.

I hate slagging off a manufacturers products but I have also had problems with Western Digital drives in the past (having had several fail). Lately I have been using Toshiba drives which have been excellent (although nolt the other day I read on this very board of somene that was having trouble with one). I think you can be lucky or unlucky .. the main thing is IF IT IS IMPORTANT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A RELIABLE BACKUP

Thanks you two. I am still able to cancel my order - what makes would you recommend? have heard that Seagate are good and noticed the mixed opinions of Toshiba ones.

I would avoid Western Digital and go for Seagate. LaCie is *supposed* to be a good make but the one I have runs MUCH hotter (and noisier) than my 300GB seagate external Firewire drive. In fact the LaCie got so hot that I removed the plastic cover! (It has a Samsung drive inside. I think LaCie just buy from the cheapest supplier). I buy my Seagate drives from dabs.com

Thanks, just cancelled the WD one. Is this the sort of thing that would be alright:

    Seagate

That's similar to mine. I find Dabs is a good company to deal with but please report back and let us know how you get on. (I'm not affiliated with Dabs in any way - just a satisfied customer.)
