I do the South Beach diet (not really to lose much more weight now but for maintaining health) and the rules on that are eat protein with every meal, eat plenty of low fat dairy (good carbohydrate) and eat veg with every meal (breakfast can be tricky, but think a glass of tomato juice, or a mushroom omelette or something). If you do eat carbs or fruits, eat protein with them to help keep your blood sugar stable.

Simple carbs and sugary things cause a spike in your blood sugar, which makes your body release insulin to process it. Then you end up with an excess of insulin in your body and you feel hungry again quickly, so feed it more carbs/sugary things to fill you up. So all through the day your body sugar is spiking and slumping, which isn't good for you.

Eat your fruit instead of having fruit juice. A piece of fruit is more satisfying.

  • Almonds, apples, avocado pears, bananas, baked beans, baked potatoes, eggs, grapes, peanut butter, oatmeal/porridge and salmon have all helped me to feel full. Ensure that you drink enough water, as otherwise you may mis-interpret the signals.

Over the last few months, I've taken more of an interest in nutrition (mainly because I want to get healthier) and have found a video channel on Youtube containing lots of info such as this. I have a sugar addiction, and have been eating something sweet (mainly chocolate) on a daily basis for 30yrs. If I didn't have chocolate, then I'd crave for a sugar fix, and even bake a sponge cake if that was my only option. I knew it wasn't good, so that was one of the reasons for looking into nutrition. It was a revelation for me when listening to one of the videos (that actually covers the high BG spikes, and then the lows from insulin release) because I had recently found that after about an hour of eating a chocolate bar/something else sugary, I could happily go to sleep. So, from the video, I learned that this was possibly from low BG due to eating something sugary. I'm trying hard to address it now, and although I haven't been able to cut sugary things out all together, I'm eating less, so hopefully weening myself off eventually.....And, I haven't touched chocolate for the last 2 months :j .....And, I've had no more episodes of sudden tiredness :j

I've gone a little off track, but just really wanted to agree with what you've said....And also agree with the protein comments....Which is another thing that's mentioned in some of the videos that I've been watching :)
If anyone has an interest in viewing the video channel, I'd be happy to post a link

Eat slowly - its one of the things Paul McKenna advocates in his weight loss series. Basically if you chew your food thoroughly then your brain will be able to tell your body to stop eating when its full rather than overfull when you wolf your food down. Either that you you eventually just get bored of eating (that happened to me a few times).

I do a lot of exercise so I need to eat a lot but I find veg, fruit, porridge and nice complex carbs are the way to go for feeling full - nuts are a great snack to keep you off the crisps as well :D

I also find small meals throughout the day are much better than fewer larger ones - I also finish each meal with some fruit or a yogurt to satisfy my sweet cravings!

Protein makes you feel full for longer. Eggs, meat, fish, beans and so on.

I find things like porridge, cereals, wholemeal bread do not make me full at all. If I eat a bowl of porridge for breakfast at 7 I am famished by 9. If I have a scrambled egg at 7 then I'm full until lunchtime.

Do you have sugar on your porridge? That would make you hungry sooner.

Well, yes I do in the form of a tsp of golden syrup or honey. But I don't like it without and I do like it eggs without sugar ;) Point taken though.

Was just a question not a dig - I am sure you would find my porridge with salt very unpleasant as it's not what you are used to. Nothing wrong with having a protein brekkie either. I often have wholemeal bread and unsugared unsalted peanut butter with a little Marmite for breakfast and I know many people think that is weird of me.
