£400 pc - PC World, Tesco or other?
Comments

I would agree with previous posters about staying clear of pcworld, currys, etc.
The key thing is the deal as much as the supplier - keep on eye on this board, the grabbit board, and ukhotdeals and theres always a couple of deals a week which will jump out as super hot.
Always had good experience with Dell - even when they go really wrong they send people out next day (or often the same day) and replace if they cant fix.
A computer is far more part of your life than a telly or a fridge so reliability is just as important as spec or speed. New model will surpasss yours for speed within weeks, but an unreliable computer will be a pain in the backside for months and years.0 -
How about this, needs a monitor though so slightly over budget once you add that

i've been told by a computer knowledgeable friend that actually pc world, currys, dixons etc are surprisingly ok to buy computers from, in terms of price. dunno about tescos tbh.
the key thing to avoid, he told me, is buying peripherals (cables and things like that) there. that's where they make their money apparantly.
have just bought myself the samsung nc10 netbook for £250 at currys. did online price check and that was the cheapest price around, same or more at the online outlets (could have got £10 cashback on quidco i s'pose but for the convenience of getting it straight away i'm not too bothered about that).

It is the completely unnecessary warranties hardsell which they make more money on usually, you cannot even step into a pc world usually without them trying to throw warranties upon you.
If a product cannot even be guaranteed to not break before you get it out of a store why would you want to buy there?"Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Good Luck" - The Doctor.0 -

Yeah, I would more agree with this. I got a Packard Bell X5620UK from PC World just before Christmas. Ordered online on Thursday and was here the following Monday. Also got £40 off by using a voucher code and cashback, so I didn't think that was a bad deal for a quad core PC, 4GB RAM, 640 HD and 20inch monitor. Much cheaper than an equivalent from Dell, even with student discount.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

Yeah I hate that, but got around it by buying online! Didn't have to go near them!Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

Please dont buy from Mesh - they are hellish, there have been two programmes devoted to them on Watchdog  and I gave up after 2 years with my duff Mesh computer, even though it supposedly had 5 years guarantee.
Ive got a Dell now and been very pleased with it and the customer service. Google for discount vouchers - you can usually get at least another £50 off what they quote.0 -

That looks like a good deal, nice kit........
Sometimes in Currys/PCWorld they give you discount on your item to take their warranty, you then phone up 24hrs later to cancel the warranty & voila!!! free discount off your item........;)What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!0 -
It's not just the warranty issue with PC World etc. It's also the customer service.
A neighbour took his PC there recently to get some virus removed. They trashed his computer and gave it back to him with just a bare OS. They hadn't backed up any data and hadn't re-installed Office. He ended up taking them to the small claims court. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0
