Hi,

I've got about £400 to spend on a new pc but don't know where are offering the best deals, any help? Tesco and pc world seem to have good deals?

I need one for downloading and playing HD movies through a HD tv, some gaming (nothing too hardcore) and general use.

All suggestions are gratefully received!

Thanks

mesh direct have some good deals, avoid PC world unless they have something on a very good sale special as you will its very over priced otherwise and can be bought cheaper elsewhere online

a friend asked me about two PC's from PC world for his son for gaming - one was priced about £350 - the other £475 .. Although the cheaper one was already obsolete and wasnt a suprise it was cheap - It wasnt long after that it disappeared from the site. The more expensive option was better - but I told him I could build an equivalent for £400 which I did.
If you know a friend who can build PC's then ask them
Can get parts from ebuyer.com or cclonline.com
If not then some local computer shops can quite often build PC's to your spec which will be competitively priced (ask around)
If you have an ALDI store near you - check whether they have any PC's for sale there - They had a very good gaming PC a few months back that was quite good value for money.

True but the OP never mentioned laptops.

I'd avoid PC World. At least at tesco the customer Service will be Ok but you'll get a better deal online. As already mentioned dmxdimension are a good place to start for the Dell deals.

Personally I'd also avoid Mesh. A friend bought one a couple of years back. It came loaded with crappy trial software and he had a couple of minor issues with i. Getting it sorted with theire customer services was a nightmare.

I've never used them but pcspecialist are suppose dto be OK and you can alter the configuration to suit yourself.

One other option is to build your own. PC Format built a DX11 gaming PC Base Unit for £342 in last month's issue (not including an OS). You could do a lot worse than copy that.

I agree with this, and though I would have written a bit more than simply providing a link which is not particularly useful to anyone (since he asked to provide details) I would not argue against it.

Dell are supremely reliable, to the point that they almost manage to put themselves out of business because they haven't yet figured out that computers should break 2 weeks after the guarantee ends :p

Jagex have been running the same Dell server for their online computer game (biggest in the world) 24/7 ever since it was first switched on years ago...

I would recommend this computer from Dell, everything that is listed is included in the price of £320 yet you can upgrade the memory or anything else for extra if you wish :)

It will at least last you a good couple of years until you need to think about upgrading :)

I would avoid buying anything from pc world directly, they always do the hard sell on warranties that you should not need if their equipment worked at all, and though DDell now sell through their stores because foot traffic does convert a hell of a lot they still sell online.

(I am not affliated in any way whatsoever in the link provided, I make no money from it)

I guess I could have expanded, howver OP did not even specify Laptop or Desktop, and now has gone quiet.
I would concur with not buying from PC Dixon's Curry World.

  • Cheers for the advice, I'm looking for a desktop - sorry I didn't mention it! Dell looks to be the best deal so far, I'd try to make it myself (as I did years and years ago) but if it goes wrong there's no-one to blame, I mean help!

This one might be worth considering ..

    http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.207-6320.aspx

Same size monitor as the Dell just this is a quad core chip and a bit more Ram ..Seems popular on Hotukdeals

    Edit
You will need to stick in a graphics card if intensive gaming is what your after

    Hi,

I bought a PC from pcspecialist back in Nov 2007 - still using it - only issue was the delivery time ... took quite a while - they do tell you on the website though - but took a bit longer than stated. Price wise they were competitive - similar to mesh (who I have had issues with - pc bough - fan went within 1 week - took 4 weeks to fix & fan very noisy after that!!)

    So would recommend PCSpecialist
