Buying something to mark birth of a child?

Hi all

I really want to buy (or make but I'm not that crafty!) something to mark our baby being born. I'd like it to be something that we'll have always and look back on as a special reminder. If I could buy anything I'd love a painting but the budget probably won't stretch to that...

Also love the idea of planting a tree, but we're moving house soon so can't do that. DH is quite artistic and could paint a watercolour, but not sure of the subject matter. MIL will make us a cross stitch picture I think, she does for most people.

I wish I was more artistic myself!

Did you buy/make anything like this? Would love to hear people's ideas.

I have yet to start on Andrew's cross-stitch sampler! Spent the last couple of weeks doing his Christmas sack instead.

One idea I've seen is to buy a photo frame that takes 4 or 5 pictures, but only use one or two for baby photos - in the others put a scan photo, some printed text eg "Name & DOB", in a third put a hand or foot print, etc.

Aww that's really sweet that you did a Christmas sack for him!

That's why you need to get someone else to do the cross stitch picture for you ;)

I do like that idea about the photo frames, but I suppose I'm not necessarily looking for something baby related (although it could be), just something that we will have forever to remind us of our baby coming in to the world. I'm not explaining that one very well am I! That's one of the reasons I would like to plant a tree to watch it grow, but unfortunately not possible just now.

I don't think you have to be too arty to do this, we just had a simple jewellery box, inside we put one of the 1st pics taken onto the lid, and we just use it for nick nack, ( paper clips, rubberbands etc.. simple, but effective for us.

I bought this for a friend and she absolutely loved it: http://www.gettingpersonal.co.uk/unusual-gifts/my-life-story.htm

I started it off by filling in the baby's birth details and doing a little photo collage. She will fill it in each year and then hand it over later on. Hopefully her daughter will be as crafty as she is, although I guess there is nothing to stop my friend from keeping it and filling it in herself.

When my DS was born his father bought a giant teddy bear. It may sound a bit boring/unoriginal but DS is 13 and still has it sitting in his room knowing it was "born" on the day he was born :)

  • If you really wanted to go with the tree could you not plant it in a pot to start with and then transfer it to the ground after you move?

When i was born an uncle of mine planted a cherry tree in my parents garden the day i was born had many many years of cherries from the tree and as far as i know it is still there alive and well even though my parents moved out of the house a few years ago!

Someone that worked for my dad at the time got my a stuffed tiger the day i was born too, i still have it infact my girls love it and it is still in brilliant condition, they were dressing him up in dolly clothes this morning which was a first i dont ever remember doing that one :rotfl:

Gosh princess you're so much cleverer than me, that's an obvious way of planting a tree that I completely hadn't thought of..doh!

Thanks for all your ideas everyone :)
