cillit bang corroded (?) my sink?

I stupidly left cillit bang power spray on my stainless steel sink for longer than the recommended time :o It has left marks that look like rusty corrosion  is there anything I can use to get this off? Or am I going to have to buy a new sink :o

first off see if your sink is magnetic (fridge magnet will do) if the magnet sticks your sink wasnt stainless its chromed tin. in which case your better off with a new sink.

If the magnet doesnt stick viniger / bleach may help.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

  • Just checked and a magnet doesn't stick to it, I have tried using bleach neat, should I leave it on for a long time to soak? what kind of vinegar would be worth a shot?

  • try slicing an onion in half and rubbing that on, that can help shift rust!

Leave it on neat for a day.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't that be the other way round? If the magnet sticks that would suggest the sink was in fact stainless steel?

will try an onion, anything is worth a bash! and will try leaving bleach on too for a day. If I sanded my sink, would it be ok after? :o:rotfl:

    Consider yourself corrected.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

No. Stainless steel has chrome and nickel added to it which removes the magnetic qualities of the iron/steel. Therefore magnets are not attracted to s/s. Thus you have a steel sink plated with chrome. The cillit bang has eroded the chrome plate and gone through to the steel underneath. Even if you get the rust off, it will still come back without some kind of treatment. Ring your insurers. If you have accidental damage cover, it may well cover the cost of replacing the sink including the labour costs.

You could sand it but you woudl then need to polish it with a metal polish once finished and that probably isnt that hygenic.

you wont get rid of the mark now whatever you do as its eaten away at the plating.it looks like a new sink unless you can put up with it? or leave a bowl in it?
it corroded the waste trap on my sink, which was an easy swap.

as above check accidental damage on insurance cover. i think its rubbish anyway cillit bang.
