New dishwasher choice

Options
Hi all

Our 7 year old Brandt integrated D/W sems to be more regularly not washing correctly. We have fitted two new arms (after small cracks apparently) and checked the salt levels etc and tried various tablets and powders but no regular results so I've come to the technical opinion it may be knackered!

I would quite like something German but budget of c£400 probably not stretching to a Miele but certainly does incorporate the more basic Bosch models

I also came across a Fagor model who I hadnt heard of so googled and found they are a major French and Spanish market player AND the biggest interest is they come with a 5 years parts and labour warranty included. Interestingly they alos bought out Brandt recently

So what would you guys recommend for around £400 and must be integrated and have at least 2 year warranty (preferably more) and apart from that not too worried about other features although delay start would be useful

Thanks

    Hi

For your budget I would definately stick to Bosch, Neff or Siemens.
  • Hi
Can I ask why if the Fagor comes with a 5 year labour and parts warranty for say same price? Is it partially lack of personal experience with say Fagor and knowing that the German ones you mentioned are generally pretty reliable for the money?

My head was already telling me Bosch but I couldn't ignore the 5 year warranty (especially as it includes labour aswell)

    Thanks for your speedy reply
  • Sunshine as far as I can tell the 5 year labour/parts warranty expires on 31/12. You then have 180 days to register it. Not clear if it will be an ongoing annual offer. From the Fagor site, there is only one online dealer selling Fagor dishwashers. The one in the link is the only dishwasher with the 5 year guarantee. It does say on Fagor's website, selected products only - this is the only selected product !

    FagorDishwasher
We could all learn a little something from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.
  • Hi Plush
Yes it does seem to be selected models within the Fagor range ,including some washer dryers which we may well go for at same time as I am paying £80 a year at the mo for our old HotpointWG420 W/D which has currently also gone wrong (it never rains eh?). 5 years warranty at £80 = same as new price of new Fagor washer dryer

Might well give Appliance Direct a call and see what they can do for both and take the plunge - I always get nervous about buying an "unknown" brand but I think the warranty is swaying me
  • I was going to ask about the fagor brand as I've never heard of it and about to put a new kitchen in, they seem pretty good value but is it still better to pay a bit more for bosch, neff for the appliances?
  • After a day of research I have moved away from Fagor after not reading many positive reports but many negative ones about rust after 18 months etc and big problems in getting after care support for teh warranty which is no use whether its 2 or 5 years.

I am going for a Siemens (its an older model by the looks of it but at £399 delivered with a 2 year warranty hopefully it should be a good purchase) . To be honest the Bosch Classixx range and the Neff basic models all look fairly similar and come in the same sort of price range but Siemens has the perceived image of higher quality slightly according to some experts out there.

Would loved to have stretched to a Miele but maybe next time

The washer dryer can get fixed hopefully under the Dom and Gen warranty and we'll review that one next year!

Prices on all ranges are apparently set to rise with the VAT hike after 31/12 so want to get this one sorted this week

    Hi sunshinetours

We are in a very similar position to you, our 8 year old Brandt integrated dishwasher is dreadful, alternating between not washing the dishes properly and leaking when it feels like it. We're undecided on what to replace it with at present, but having read the Which best buy report, were leaning towards Bosch. Would be interested in a pointer towards the research you did that led you to Siemens.

I'd never heard of Brandt until we moved into this house (we had a Bosch dishwasher at our last house and it was brilliant), but it was already here and for a while did the job reasonably well.

Are you going to install yours or are you buying from someone like Comet who will do it for you?

Whilst prices are supposed to rise due to VAT, I'm not convinced they will - after all, they seem to have stabilised again this year around the £x99 range.

I've got a Bosch, and its excellent. Quiet too. John Lewis do a good selection of dishwashers including their own brand, many including 3 year warranties.

I had a cheap indesit one before, which lasted about 7 years, but it was really noisy.

    Hi Jonathan

Yes good old Brandt -we have hob, oven and dishwasher and an integrated washer/dryer which we never used as it was rubbish, all in our house when we bought it and after about 6/7 years they are all showing signs of going downhill!

The Bosch, Neff and Siemens are all effectively the same machines with slightly different functions. I did lots of research including on uk whitegoods website forum and also with a couple of local independent retailers near where I live and they both kept coming up with Bosch, Neff or Siemens with a couple of people saying they perceived Siemens to be the better of the 3 slightly (but think this may just be preference). Its worth noting neff only do integrated appliances so they should in theory have an advantage maybe if you have to have integrated?

All are triple A rate machines and all are pretty quiet according to the stats sheets for each and all much more economical elevtricity wise and water wise than our old Brandt's!

What I did learn is that unless you are going for something like a Miele or above (ie at least double the money than I am paying) then the rest of the mid range mentioned above will be probably much of a much and you take your chance s a little as to whether you get a good machine or not. However you are taking your chances less than if you were buying the chinese tat that is rebadged with various large retailers - Proline, kenwood, Haier etc that you will be lucky to get 18 months or unbroken use from

Also if you can avoid integrated you have a far greater selection and lower price point for possibly better quality - unfortunately couldn;t convince my wife of this!

I have purchased via Appliance City (go via quidco for 2% aswell which was a little bonus I didn't realise) - they have some good offers on at the moment. Will try and get old machine out and just connect up new one as shouldn't be too difficult like for like but we shall see!

Also noted that Miele are offering 5 year warranties from 1/1 to 31/1 on some appliances so wait if you are buying one of them

Finally I think many manufacturers are having price increases from 1/1 anyway regardless of VAT and I have seen a couple of retail sites mention 10% price increases for the Bosch group brands - whether its true or not who knows

To be honest its a minefield and although I feel a little better informed than before I am still none the wiser as to whether I have bought a good machine or not -time will tell!! Good luck ;)
  • Hi sunshinetours

Thanks for that, very helpful! Like you, I can't persuade my other half to move away from the integrated position we now have, so we are restricted on choice. The Brandt has got to the stage now where we quite often wash up rather than use the dishwasher, as it tends to be quicker! We can't stretch to Miele, tempting as it is, so will probably look at Bosch or Siemens. For some stupid reason, I hadn't thought about going through quidco, even though I'm a member. Will have a look at the website you used - thanks for the tips, much appreciated!
