It's going so slowly, it's unusable! Takes forever to get into it and then "freezes" on me, so I then can't get out of it. The egg timer appears and, even using control, alt and delete, it still takes about 20 attempts to get out of it. It's been like this for a couple of weeks now.
I've run a virus test, spybot test, adaware test, Syngate worm test, disk fragmenter, scandisk ... everything I can think of and nothing make any difference. Wondering if it's the hot weather recently? The only other thing I can think of is that my normal.dot file could well be corrupted and the file keeps being duplicated ... though it's been like this a lot longer than I've been having these problems, so can't be the cause??
Any help please would be much appreciated.

have you tried deleting normal.dot?0
-
Yes - delete it or preferably rename it.
The other thing to watch out for is the indexing services - sometimes these can burn a lot of CPU, and occasionally you can get problems where the startmenu bar spin CPU. Depends which version you have.
Open task manager and find out which processes (as opposed to Applications) are burning all the CPU.0 -
Sorry to be a pain, but can you please advise how best to delete/rename normal.dot and also let me know where I can find task manager.
As you may have guessed, I'm not exactly an expert on the computer!!
Cheers,
Mimi

Hi MimiJane,
For Taskmanager, hold down the left control, left Alt and Delete buttons together0 -
Hi Mimi,
Easiest way to get to the task manager is to right click on an empty space in the taskbar (at the bottom of the screen beween the start button and the control panel applets). Choose Task Manager from the context menu. Click on the processes tab and then click on CPU to order the column by CPU. If you see all 0's, then click it again to invert the ordering.
To find normal.dot, one way which is more interesting than doing a straight file search is to open word. In Tools | Options | File Locations double click the user templates. It should point you to the exact location of the file such as: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
Copy the location and open windows explorer. Paste the location into the location and it will take you straight to the directory.
Close word - this is important as it will have a lock on the file.
Please please please just rename the file - deleting it is not a great idea as you will need to setup a whole new set of defaults again and its probably best if you don't add that as more hassle.

Thanks for that, but still need help finding the task manager.
I've clicked on an empty space and get "tool bars", "cascade windows", "tile windows horizontally", etc., etc. I can't see a context menu anywhere. What am I doing wrong here? Sorry to be so thick!

Task Manager is the box that comes up when you do ctrl alt delete. (qttask is just a process for Quick Time)0
