mastercard debit

  • Under the terms of my merchant agreement (1) I am contractually obliged to accept debit Mastercard for any transaction that I accept other card types for.

I tried to pay my Electricity/Gas bill online like I used to do when it was a Maestro card but there was no Mastercard Debit option. Can I now 'not pay' given that I tried and the only reason I didn't pay was because their system doesn't list the card type.

I have agreed to have two paypoint swipe cards sent out to me but would I have a case now refusing to pay the bill?

Only if you are looking to get cut-off or have a prepayment meter installed.

I beleive it is Scottish Hydro you are having the issue with and as far as I know their "pay other than direct debit for dual fuel tariffs" costs the same (the do with prepayment). In fact it maybe time to pay by DD and save some money if they are charging you more for whatever plan you have, i.e. conventional quarterly billing, monthly payment plan etc.

You obviously have internet access, so why not just pay with the bill payment function via internet banking. Problem sorted and you don't need to provide card details.

Perhaps you should learn to read the whole thread before going off on one? If you'd taken the time to read a few posts down he says and I quote: 'I stand corrected'
Perhaps an apology is in order?
The post was meant in jest, like the kind of banter you might have in a pub. If I *really* wanted to "go off on one" and offend anyone, I'd have posted something like this:

"For gods sake you should check your facts before you come on here posting something that you're wrong about, you thick scumbag".

    But I didn't.

Of course, if the OP is offended, I'd invite them to PM me and I'll happily apologise to them direct. If, that is, they're offended. Which I doubt.

In other news, does anyone actually know the point of Mastercard Debit? I mean, they've got Maestro already. Surely the two could become one?

Cost. A lot of banks are moving from Maestro to Visa because of the cost. So I assume this is when Mastercard decided ooo we'll get into the debit card market.

Mastercard Debit has been around for years in America and Australia.
  • Hi Folks, I am in a similar predicament with the newly adopted Mastercard Debit through the Clydesdale / Yorkshire bank. I did not ask for this card it was foisted upon me by my bank which is the Clydesdale. I previously had a Switch / Maestro card and had no issues at all, now I can't use Pay at the pump facilities in Asda or Tesco garages. I also found out after looking at my account that every transaction I have through Paypal using Mastercard Debit has been charged an additional £1.50 on top of the item cost per transaction. This never happened via Switch Maestro. When I contacted the bank they said they couldn't understand why but when I read all the threads on the internet about the exact same subject it appears that our bank is taking us for fools. If I can't trust my bank to tell me the truth then I no longer will let them deal with my money, Bye Bye Clydesdale.

I'm getting more confused than ever.

I bank with HSBC and currently have a Mastercard credit card and a Maestro debit card from them. I have now received a letter from them saying "Your HSBC debit card is changing from an HSBC Maestro Debit Card to an HSBC Visa Debit Card and you'll be receiving the new card within the next few weeks."

There is a picture of what the new card will look like and it only has the logo of Visa on it.

Why, if I have already have an HSBC Mastercard Credit Card would they not be changing my debit card to a Mastercard Debit Card.
