Phone a local removal company and ask where they get theirs from. I did this and whilst I had to pay for my boxes they were the "real thing" and as I agreed to take second hand ones they only charged me 20p a box

Many of the self storage places sell boxes if you want the 'real thing'. I had some great 'wardrobe' boxes with a hanging rail, meant we could leaves clothes on hangers & transfer from wardrobe to box to wardrobe. May not be money saving but its time & hassle saving.

    Hi,
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, as its not really to do with mortgages but is about moving.

Im moving at end of next week (just from rented prop to another rented prop), but Im struggling to get hold of any decent size cardboard boxes to pack my stuff up. Ive rang Tescos but they say they dont really get many large boxes as most stuff comes on pallets now. Ive been searching on internet (even EBay) but they are quite expensive (looking at about £30 for the size/quantity I need) and what with all the other costs (van hire, admin fees, deposit etc), I'd rather try and save some money. Plus it annoys me having to pay so much for boxes which used to be given away free by supermarkets next to the checkouts!
Anyone got any ideas where is best to get some good size boxes from either cheaply or even better free?

    Thanks in advance
if you live anywere near any factorys or small shops who distribute things then go in and ask.. i did this in peterborough as most of these places get the items they sell or distribute in larger boxes that they throw away when they take the items out, and if your good you can even blag some bubble wrap.. if your was in peterborough i have enough bubble wrap to do 20 moves lol

  • Something I wrote a few weeks ago...... "I went around town asking for boxes and was astounded ( this is move number 5 in 6 years!!) when I heard the response....no we don't have any. I know many a squashed for fire prevention and that companies want to seem environmentally savvy, but they have to PAY to have it removed. I also realise that they have recycling targets.
I have always been given them before. Some chap in Waitrose told me how they hardly pack anything in boxes and that they had none - only to bump into them on the way round the shop. I was fuming. I don't mind being told NO but to be fobbed off with his ideas of the environment when I studied it at University was highly annoying. He told me to buy them from Argos. Get real.
The wine shops are still great (don't mind popping in there!!) and Tescos gave what they hadn't ripped. I don't want to pay for anything if I can get it for nothing!!
    Got any boxes anyone?:p"
Countrywide and Tescos (keep trying depends what is there) were the best.
The thread was about Removal Firms. Link in case interested....

  • thanks evryone for your replies (I think ive clicked the thanksbutton for you all!)

I went with kit's suggestion of mcdonalds and managed to get some decent size boxes and the lady there was vhelpful and even suggested I try again later or tomorrow and they should have more. Think Ive managed to locate some at one of the other depots of the company I work for so hopefully sorted now. Just got the hard work of the actual packing to do now though (unfortunately the lady at mcdonalds wasnt nice enough to offer her services there :D )!!

    Thanks again everyone

Open an account with DHL. Tell 'em you are going to be shipping lots of large consignments very soon and ask for some boxes. They'll deliver them next day for free ! ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Then you move Ha ha !

For anyone looking for boxes in future for moving or storage. I can recommend these very highly-

Lidl is quite a good place for boxes (or at least used to be, I think it may depend on the store) although they are not necessarily the sturdiest of boxes. I used to have a loft full of cardboard boxes due to moving at least once a year - just throw away the knackered ones each time. For our last move we bought quite a few stackable plastic ones for heavy things like books, so they are ready for the next move. But as we have not moved for 18 months and my parents have given me all my old books and school notes etc. the next move will be even more horrendous.
