Removal Firms

Options
Just been searching and couldn't find anything on removal firms...

I just wondered if there is any such thing as a removal going rate?... I have no idea what a typical removal might cost.... in my case I am in the early stages of searching for a new home but the move will be around 40 miles away.

I'm doing all the sums and trying to put together a budget but just don't know what amount to figure for removals (whether I use a firm or hire a van and do it all myself).

Thanks for any help.

i think they vary quite a lot in price

i rang a large company and got quoted £200 (2 bed house with no sofas, fridge freezer or cooker)

then rang a local bloke who is still insured and he only charging £50 :D

We are moving in the next couple of weeks and had 5 quotes last week. We have a 3 bed semi, with quite a lot of "stuff" ie 3 kids, a full loft etc.

The quotes were for full packing and moving, to a house less than half a mile away. They varied from £795 to £3500!!!! The cheapest firm is BAR member etc and very local, and comes recommended so we are going with them, as long as they are available on the dates we need (exchanging tomorrow hopefully)

Big firms often charge a fairly flat rate charge on a per day/ lorry basis which is fine if you have a large property but if you have a small furnished flat so only a part load it is very high.

Local firms tend to be much more cost effective for smaller properties but if you negotiate down the price then you have to be more flexible when you items will turn up. When I moved from Dundee to Bristol the big companies were wanting nearly £1000 for what was less than a transit van load but a local company agreed to do it for £80 cash but it would be 2 weeks later for the items to turn up as the part load was just going to be tagged on to a larger load going down the bristol way.

Since then I have hired a Luton Box Van for £75 and bought boxes for £30 then roped in friends and family to carry - so add the cost of a few creates of beer after :)

I suppose a lot of it will come down to how much or how big the big the stuff you need to move is. If you got an American style fridge/freezer, couple of sofa's, thats a luton filled uo. A luton van doesn't carry that much, if you need to make numerous trips on the day of the move you will be delaying your purchasers if they are moving in on the same day. 7.5 tonner much better option, but still doesn't carry that much stuff.

One of my clients recently hired 3 lutons to move, got two the day before the move & filled them up, drove them round to his new house first thing on the day of the move & then went back to filll the third. By the time he had completed, all his stuff was waiting outside his new home. Unfortunatley, the people he was buying off were also moving themselves & had to make numerous trips, so he didn't get into his property intil 4pm. Luckily he didn't have to make 3 trips himself.

If you live in a big town/city, try a firm from further afield, chances are they will be cheaper, was for me.

    Don't forget insurance.

Hmm... a luton does hold a lot if packed correctly - I did a 2 bed flat (including 2 king size beds, 2 3 seater sofas, full home cinema (and we are talking floor standing big speakers not one of these all in ones), 8 seater dining room setup) in one go, the only thing I didnt have was a fridge/ freezer

I am in a similar situation, looking for a removals company and so far have had a visit but no quote. The chap said they would pack and everything so I nearly fell over! :money: was shouting in my head "how much for the packing?" So I asked and was told about £200. We have a 4 bedroom house but not much stuff.
Last time I refused to do everything ourselves and managed at the last minute to get Pickfords to help us fill our van and do one trip with one of theirs. It cost £416 to move about 25 miles. The hire van was £70.
The Pickfords chaps were really good at space saving and very careful.

I would like a similar situation but am very willing to let the company do all the moving. I am not paying £200 nearly packed half myself already anyway.
I am awaiting quotes but imagine the price will be high as they are recommended by our very posh estate agents!!!
I shall be interested too in how much others have paid.
Good luck with your move Dfarry!!
