Like another poster has mentioned it's really worth considering the packing option. I moved 2 yrs ago and used a local removal firm (3 branches & member of association of removal firms). Moved 5 miles and the contents of a very full 2 bed terrace. It cost £700 approx. They used a 7.5 tonne lorry. Pickfords wanted about £200 more.

Packing option meant just that - all contents of house (contents of cupboards, drawers, curtains, bed linen, kitchen, garage etc) packed in boxes. Was done very carefully and efficiently - they did not stint on packaging etc. They came about midday of the day before I was to move out. Packed for about 6 hours then returned the next day to finish packing and loaded the van.

It made moving much less painful. When I got to my new house they unpacked for me.

When I next move I won't hesitate to spend the extra and get the removals firm to pack for me.

To be honest I'd not considered using the packing option but my mum moved about 2 years before and went for the packing option. It cost about £200 more than the quote to move without packing.

One thing you must consider if you move yourself is .... what if the Luton van you hire is stolen or in an accident - does your house contents insurance cover the loss? (OK, it's not a likely occurence but how much value do you place on your contents?)
