Unless the £860 is either the charge for the period specified, or the charge for the full year with the single person's discount applied.

Going on the info given by the OP, the £860 and £838 really do not compute. And he does seem to be expecting a further 25% SP discount.

    Something is not right somewhere.

    Back from work :)
Couldnt get through today while on my lunch-break, just hold music for ages.

I was rounding off with my initial costs, off the top of my head.
    So..
Yearly charge for a band B Property is £877.47
This bill is from 07/07/09 till 31/03/10 and comes to £838.08
With the SP discount it will be £628.56

Sorry for all the confusion. (fighting a cold, and winning, i hope!)

I did suggest above that they accept 6 months worth, and then pay the other 2 months as and when, but someone said that normally the monthly payments are spread over 10 months, so they dont normally take direct debits etc in Feb/Mar

they probably will allow you to, you need to ring them and try and spread the bill, they may let you spread the arrears over to next year but most likely they will want to get a liability order against you first.
They will almost certainly let you split the bill into 3 and then pay your CT as normal in April when it becomes due.
They cannot refuse payment from you and if you decided to pay a third now without their permission there is nothing they can do to stop you, if you request a new bill then it will probably be late february before they even issued you with a summons and by the time it came to court you would have paid it off.
If it does go to court then just turn up there is always someone from the council who will arrange repayment terms without it going before the magistrates, also note that even if aliability order is made against you this will in no way reflect on your credit record, however there will be fees added to your outstanding balance.

But £877.47 divided by 12 makes £73.13 per month, so 9 months should cost £658.10.

i reckon i can reshuffle to pay it all in one if i really really have to, as i dont really want to go to court as a defence, as i'm not sure how it will affect my work, as i need security clearance to do my job.

Well they won't be trying to overcharge you on purpose... any mistakes will be honestly arrived at if you see what I mean. But it's quite possible that a council tax bill that is in any way complex may contain mistakes.

Council tax bills are one of life's little quirks. You might get three before they send you the right one..

You can check the annual charge for your band and council on-line usually. I would not assume it must be correct!
