Sudden Council Tax

Got back from xmas and was faced with a lovely bill from the council tax people for £860ish

To get this bit out of the way, i know i should have checked that it was being paid etc, i've made a mistake etc.
Only after advice now :)

Basically i have my DFW plan, a lot of which relies on the next couple of months..i.e this is the point where the plans are coming together.

long story short, i cant afford 860 straight out. apparently i get 25% off for living alone, but thats still 645, and i cant afford that either!

So, anyone know where to go from here? obviously I've been unable to call them today, as its a bank holiday. Do councils have a sort of payment plan thing in place? as im sure i can work that into my monthly expenditure, but im half expecting a 'No. Needs to be paid now, or big brother will evict you'
Its Warwick Council, if that makes a difference

  • What period does the £860 cover? Is this the arrears to date or the whole of the balance for the C Tax year ending on the 31st of March 2010?

The way they tend to work is: 1st April, it's due, but you can pay by 10 monthly installments (so for you £64.50/month for 10 months). If you miss a payment, the whole amount is due immediately.

Based on the fact council tax installments would normally be due in April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December, January ... with February and March being months 11/12 ... you don't really stand a chance.

Not only do they want £645 now, but from 1st April they'll be wanting a further £65/month from you every month.

They are one of the major ones to pay because they have the power to drag you through the courts and chuck you in jail with all the naughty people. They are ferocious and relentless.... little hitlers.

Thats what i'm afraid of.. says it needs to be paid by the 5th Jan.
I cant raise that sort of money in a week.. its like half my monthly wage :(
I mean, if i pay it from this months wage, plus my rent, then i cant afford any of my bills...
Bit of a head spinner really!

  • If there's no way that you can pay all of the monies owed now I would contact the Council Tax office at your Local Authority immediately and claim your Single Person's 25% allowance and ask them for a new demand. This might give you enough time to negotiate a bank-loan to cover the amount you owe. Please be in no doubt whatsoever that they will chase you quickly and relentlessly for the amount you owe. If you don't pay up they will almost certainly issue you with a court summons very, very soon.
  • Did you by any chance stop paying because you changed bank accounts? Years ago my local Barclay's closed down and I was transferred to the big branch in town. I didn't notice until I got a similar bill to your that council tax had not been collected along with one other direct debit. All others were OK so I hadn't noticed. I checked and it had stopped when the bank had changed. I went in to show them but to no avail they wanted the money there and them and would start county court proceeding etc, etc......
I went to the bank and they paid it as they admitted it was their mistake. They let me pay it back over the same number of months as it would have been, 7 or 9 I think, without interest.

    good luck
Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me

Ahh.. so worth prioritising this to the top, and dealing with a few red bills next month...

Not so much luck unfortunatly looby-loo!

Just wondering.. if i can knock of the 25%, do you think they would tke off 2 months worth (the 2 months that havnt happend yet - Feb/mar) and let me pay that by instalments?
that would bring the cost more into the £500 region, and still tight, but maybe a bit more manageable

  • Warwickshire wont give a toss if its tight for you or not.

It will be a case of pay it now or they will proceed.

They will get the judgement first then agree a plan..
