Hi the front tyres on our car have worn on the INSIDE edge. what could the reason's for this be?

I know the outside edge is the tracking but the inside edge????
The car is a hyundia Trajet front wheel drive.

Thanks Niall

  • Too much hard town driving?

    Accelerating hard out of corners?

Some cars just get thru tyres down to geomotry set up. Alfa's, Fiats, Volvos all wear on the inner edge.

Get new tyres put on before you get the tracking looked at.

Tracking, Your wheels are facing outwards to much causing wear on the inside of the tyre.
Incorrect tracking can be inside or outside depending if the wheels are toe'd in or toe'd out

Could be going over speed cushions too fast also, this is known to rip the inside edge of tyres, when the cushions are worn, if the tracking is out this may increase the damage. ABD site for more details on hump damage:

It may be the camber of your wheels. Have them checked - usually for free at a tyre shop.

If you still have 3/4 of your original tread pattern at legal tread depth no need to change the tyres.

    Alignment/ Tracking

    Too quickly over speed humps

    Tyre pressures could be wrong

Seconding a proper alignment check. Tracking is just one adjustment, namely toe. If you are running too much negative camber that can cause wear on the inside edge.

    Could also be worn bushes.

It will be tracking but vehicles with power steering do wear the edges of the tyres more than manual steering, as for the comments on camber it can be checked, but on 95% of cars cannot be ajusted and if there is a problem is probably a sign of wear or crash/impact damage.

And to clear up the tyre law as stated. it reads there must be 1.6mm of tread on the central 3/4 of the tyre and visable tread on the outer edges.

legally you dont have to change your tyres but remember tyres are the only thing on your car keeping it to the road so its one area of maintence that should not be skimped on as it will effect control and braking distance especially with this icy weather we are having
