Stop buying sandwiches

  • This is so me too :rotfl:

I used to be a nanny which was great as i ate at the house and didnt have to provide my own food :p

But now i work in a school so i try to take my own lunch. My sandwiches dont taste as nice as shop bought ones and i get bored easily. I've tried crackers/crisp breads with all sorts of fillings and now im bored of that

All the other people bring in pot noodles, microwave meals or they go to the shops.

Its so tempting to go to the bakers, fish & chip shop, news agents etc but im going to be more strong willed and try to think of more interesting things to eat :T

  • I'm so easily tempted to buy sandwiches.

Sometimes I'll take in leftovers (lasagne, pasta, stew) and that makes a nice change because it's like a proper meal.

I agree with you all!! I find that varying my bread helps a bit - I often pop into local Co-op on way home and can pick up nice rolls reduced to 10-20p - this helps me make nicer sandwiches. If we've got rubbish bread I just dont eat the sandwiches and end up buying something else. Tortilla wraps are nice for a change as well.
Leftovers are good if you have a microwave at work - I make a bit extra for tea and take it for lunch the next day :)
I like the idea of a packed lunch challenge - I'm gonna set myself a challenge of taking my own lunch every day in january! Reckon this should help my diet as well :) xx
Trying to jump back onto the moneysaving wagon ....
  • Me too! I need to stop spending on food at work. I normally buy a scone in the morning which is 63p, then jacket and beans for lunch which is £1.30 which I don't think is too bad, then most days I buy something from the vending machine which is 50p or so. So, that's at least £12 at work each week! I think I'm going to start putting a jacket potato in the oven when I make dinner to take for lunch the next day and heat it up in the microwave at work.

  • Me me me me! I do soooo many of the things in all of your posts above. And even worse, when I buy sandwiches at the supermarket I'm also wasting petrol to drive there and back, buying magazines and other crapola I do not need!:mad::mad::mad: And.... I also buy fattening things like chocolate, crisps and fizzy pop - nooooooo!

I just don't feel like I get a proper break when I stay in the office and eat something 'HM' :o. Excuses, excuses, I know.

Maybe we should all share some ideas for interesting lunches so we can vary what we are all taking to work?

I have this problem. I find sandwiches made by someone else always taste better than home made ones (WHY!?) - I think that's just all in the head though.

Do you have anyone in work that you would be able to swap lunches with? I have a different problem in that there's nowhere local to my job that I can pop out for lunch so tend to have cereal, soup, noodles etc in my drawer (along with most of my colleagues). If I don't fancy what I have then I can swap with a colleague - might work for some of you?

Take the sandwich and eat it outside away from the office - sit on a park bench or something.

Shop bought sandwiches taste different because of the added fat, salt and E numbers. A ginsters ploughmans sandwich has around 4g of salt in:eek:

I think its a case of being organised at the start of the week when you do your meal plan (you need a meal plan when you go shopping anyway). Don't take cash to work with you either and that way you are not tempted into buying rubbish. A home made lunch is more nutritious and less fattening than a shop bought one - use different breads (not that plastic pap like hovis and warburtons or tesco value) - try rye bread, onion bread, tomato bread etc.
  • What I do is put a portion from dinner each night into a container and then bung it in the bottom drawer of the freezer. I don't label it - anything in that drawer is lunch. Then when I leave for work in the morning I grab a lunch surprise from the freezer, it doesn't slop over the car, and defrost it in the microwave. It is very cheap and has the element of surprise.
