PS3 damaged my disc, what can I do?

Bought COD: Modern Warfare 2 on realease date but only managed to get round to opening the seal last weekend. Must have only played less than 10 hours since then but it's stopped working... gutted.

It would freeze at startup screen and couldn't go any further. I tried the disc in a friends PS3 and it's the same problem. Other game works fine on my PS3.

Took it back to Sainsburys today and the lad at the counter showed me on the reverse of the disc that a ring had been 'burnt' on to it by my PS3. Apparently this can happen if the PS3 is moved whilst the disc is being played. Don't remember this happening but I do have a 2yr old neice! Needless to say I didn't get an exchange (quite rightfully).

Is this disc completely useless to me now or can I salvage anything?
I didn't make a back-up (don't know how or even if it's allowed)... but is it legal to buy a back-up copy? Would it work on PS3? My friend has the same game, don't how we would do it but would it be legal to copy the came somehow?

    You could try contacting Sony.

My son dropped our Mario Kart disc on the floor and scratched it. I called Nintendo who said they'd replace it for a nominal fee but the girl who I spoke to said often they didn't bother to charge. They replaced it and never billed me.

Obivously this was for a Wii and was Nintendo but it's certainly worth calling Sony to see if they replace media cheapl, mny companies do.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Kind of a grey area. Copyright, Designs and Patents Act allows you to make personal backup copy if it's needed of "computer programs". But violating any copy protection mechanisms (which PS3 and most games have) is illegal. But it's illegal for something to prevent a legal right you have so some would argue that making it illegal to violate copy protection is itself illegal since it stops your ability to legally make a back up of a computer program. Not something that's ever been court tested as a defence.

You may be able to get a replacement disc from Activision for an admin fee.

    taa peeps.
Can't see Sony replacing the game as it's not a fault in the PS3 (at least I hope not) otherwise I would be looking for a replacement console!!

    Might give Activision a try

What do you mean by "burnt" No way could the PS3 laser "burn" anything on the disk.

Could try repairing the surface of the disk, as the actual data is beneath this.

Just look up in your favorite search engine on reviving unreadable disks.

Sorry, when I said Sony I was assuming it was published by them.

Worht giving Activision a try though. Most games publishers will replace damaged media for a small fee.

The lad used the word 'burnt/burned'
It's a perfect ring about 1.5" from the centre of the disc. Like it's been etched from the factory. Disc surface still feels smooth but I tried giving a small section of it a wipe with lint free cloth but didn't seem to make a difference.
  • It's a scratch really. Most of the time a scratch doesn't make much difference, except when it goes round the disc rather than across it! Same thing happened with my xbox, but the damage wasn't bad enough to stop the disc from working. Good luck getting a replacement!
  • go into your local blockbuster.

Because the 360 has a common fault of scratching discs at will, alot of stores now use their existing disc cleaners to repair these games for about a fiver.

I think they make it so if it doesnt work they dont charge so its worth a try with your disc seeing as the disc type is irrelevant.

    It's worth a try.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

I thought that you were going to suggest that the OP rented the game and swapped the discs over....

    ;)
