It's not illegal.Batteries usually have a 3 or 6 month guarantee with them. It's essentially because you can easily degrade the battery by incorrectly using and charging it.
As it's classed as a consumable item, it will wear out... much like brakes on cars etc. If you take your car in for a service after 6 months and you've done 20,000 miles - chances are your brakes on your car are needing replaced - they'll charge you for this. Ok you've used the car a lot (Like I do).
But if you constantly charge up your battery after just just using it for a few
minutes on battery power you'll seriously damage it.
Every extended warranty I've ever seen always excludes batteries.
From memory there's posssibly only one laptop manufacturer that gives a 12 month warranty with their batteries, I think it's IBM/Lenovo(I'm probable wrong)... but 99% of them it's either 3 or 6 months.0 -

Dell batteries have a 1 year warranty. However, the battery warranty is not upgradeable. It's stated on their website in the T's & C's.
As for whether the laptops go wrong. Yes, sometimes. My Dell Latitude needed a new keyboard after two years and a hard disk after nearly three years. Both were replaced under warranty without question.
My current Toshiba Tecra needed a new motherboard. Again it was replaced under warranty without question.

I got the laptop in january, they have called before about the warranty they also sent stuff in the post for me to sign up. I have ignored these as i never buy extended warranties. I can't recall how much it was when they tried before but it couldn't of been that cheap or i would of signed up.
It just seemed so reasonable, being that a laptop isn't really easily serviced buy a novice. I would fix my desktop without hesitating but i would think twice about my lappy.
£56.40 for three years peace of mind knowing that if pretty much anything goes wrong they will come next day to repair, seems good and i'm glad now i bit the bullet and paid.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. well on most laptop batteries the warantee is very limited. I never use dell because, well, they are crap in comparison to other companies.0

Crap? What other companies deal with the amount of sales as Dell? Surely there is a small percentage of every sale that has a problem with every company?

I think £56 for a three year call out warranty is excellent value. Other computer company extended warranties are normally in the region of hundreds of pounds.
Also remember if you decide to sell your computer, your Dell warranty is transferable, giving more value to your package that you are selling.

Update.Call Dell up re warranty extension. Get quoted £200 + VAT for 3 year next business day. Straight off this is dropped to £110 + VAT and a free Dell all in one printer (I forgot to ask the model).Said I didn't want the printer, so they dropped it to £75 + VAT.Said someone had been offered it for £56. let me just explain the "dell is crap" statement, not that I imagine Lord_Chris needs my help.
I have known a few people, businesses and consumers that have been burned badly with a Dell system, and Dell support/customer service, and it has put them off ever purchasing from them again. Which is fair enough, I have a similar problem with IBM......Probably irrational (on my part), but I still wont buy IBM 6 years later.
Now, onto the warranty. I always always always buy a warranty with laptops, mostly because they are relatively expensive to fix (hardware wise), and get a lot of abuse. Other than that, if it is my money, I never buy a warranty.
The price you were offered seems good, go for it.
Oh and, on second thoughts, the only other thing I buy warranties for is Servers, things that you just need to work 24/7 and things you need fixed as soon as possible. No hassle.0 -
Update. Called Dell today re the warranty situation, they started with £75+VAT. I said someone at work had been offered around £50. They said not possible, the offer was for £56 including VAT. I said can I have that. She said fine, so I get my 3 year on site warranty for £48 (as I don't pay VAT living in the channel islands)!!
