I had a telephone call from dell today. They offered me a 3 year next day warranty for my laptop for £56.40. This sounded ludicrously cheap so i took it.
Is it worth it?
I have 7 days to cancel if i want so if its rubbish i will!
Thanks Neil

Dell know how often their equipment goes wrong, and how much it costs to fix them. They average the price out, and add a profit margin. They are not going to offer you this at a loss, so you have paid them some money which they will make a (possibly 100%) profit on for 2 years peace of mind. I never bother with extended warranties of any sort, and I have saved 1000's over the years. Electrical equipment generally lasts at least 5 years without any problems.
The odds are that nothing will go wrong with it, but you may have the one in 1,000 that goes wrong in the first 3 years. I have 10 year old Dells, still going strong. Batteries and Disks are the things most likely to fail. The battery isn't usually covered, and disks are cheap.
It's certainly cheap, but "is it worth it", only you can decide.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
our warranties for 3 years at work (retail store) range from £90 up to £200 depending on the price of the goods so it seems very fair!0

Its the warranty where they come to your home and fix it. I would only need to claim once in three years to have saved i would have thought?
I never ever buy a warranty either but there is so much that can go wrong with a laptop that i thought it was a good deal?
Has anyone else been offered a extended warranty? I think i remember something i read on here about them, i recall them being cheaper than what i paid?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. It is cheap, and you are right, one callout and you have a bargain (especially compared to the high street prices). It is just rare for the hardware to go wrong in the first 3 years, otherwise they wouldn't offer it to you at that price.
Software is a different matter..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
So not everything is covered? I thought that if i had a problem they would come?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

batteries arent covered in any warantee because they are considered disposable... they are not meant to last for the life expectancy of the equipment so, companies use it as a catch 22 in avoiding a warantee. If your battery goes wrong after a week of buying it they can refuse you under warantee. sucks dont it.0

If you have a software problem, they will tell you to reinstall XP from the backup partition, or XP CD. It's a hardware extended warranty only.

In my opinion it's a good deal....as long as you know what it covers and what it doesn't.
Even as a hardware only warranty it's good value. Look at these rough prices
Price of a hard drive for laptops range about £50-£100
price of optical drives are about the same
Price of screen is about £200-300+
Then you'll probably pay someone to fit them, especially in the case of the screen and they can be hard to source.
Most likely part to fail is probably one of the drives.
Just remember every company selling warranties makes money, but working out at under £20 a year it's a good price.0 -

Can I ask when did you originally buy the laptop, just because my 90 days will be up soon so wondering if I'll get a call?
Cheers,
