New laptop help

Hi all

I'm looking to buy a new laptop, and I have a budget of up to £450. I've seen a few that I like... could anyone advise on them? I'm just using for internet, watching films and working on.

Thanks in advance!

Run from PC world, wouldnt buy from them.

Pc World is HP and they have knocked £200 pound to make it the same as the Full prices Dell 15.
Curries is a low voltage processor really slow.
Tesco Toshiba is a rubbish Celeron processor.

Best one from your list is the Tesco Acer

If your getting it online use a cashback site too squeeze a few points and don't forget your double clubcard points

  • I won't be buying from PC World!

What you want to use the laptop for, any specific programs or Games?

  • Not really a big gamer, just The sims really (don't laugh at me).
General internet surfing, I also work for 63336 so their programme. MS Word etc, watching films and just general stuff.

Sorry, just seen all your post. I was tempted by the John Lewis Acer as it comes with a 2 year warranty; is it not as good as the Tesco Acer though?

    Thanks for your reply.

Which the Sims? Cause Sims 3 is rather graphic needy and needs a decidated card.

It looks that the Tesco (last link) and the John Lewis are the same. So a 2 Yr warrenty would be more favourable.

Problems with this Acer that I can see is only USB on the left side making your mouse if you use one to be in the wrong side for all but lefties. No webcam.

I think there are similar priced but better. Will look and get back to you.

  • Yep, it's The Sims 3. Would the Acer be ok for that? I think the Tesco one has 500gb memory as opposed to the 320gb from John Lewis, but i don't mind buying an external HDD if, for practically the same price, i'm getting an extra year's warranty.
  • I was looking at same laptop myself. Does seem to be the best out there. Its with a 500GB HDD but only 1 years warranty @ ebuyer

  • Not bothered about a webcam, never used one. my mum's laptop has the usb on the left too and she uses a mouse, but she just got one with a longer cable, and it's fine.

Thanks very much for all the advice! If you can find anything better i shall be eternally grateful. I'm really bad at making decisions when it comes to spending money on technology!

what do you currently use for Sims 3? Cause you really need a Dedicated Graphics card for it, which Dell do a Studio 15 but is just above your budget at £499.

I have sims 3 on a Studio 15 with P8600 and the 512MB ATi Card and it runs fine at full resolution, only jerks a little when partying and running maxing the game speed. So you could reduce the graphics slightly and should run on the T4200 Studio with the 512MB ATi graphics. Also currently get 500GB free upgrade on the HD and comes with webcam, 3 USB with 1 on the right side, And the lid hinge system is straight from the XPS laptops.

6% back on Top cashback so will put is down by about £15-20

To add to your Hard drive question. I still have 150GB of space free on my 320GB drive, so I really not think you need the extra space for a long time, by then you will either be gettng a new Computer or can get an external for Next Christmas

I know I talk about Dell alot , I don't work for them, I just like my Laptop and how it performs
