I want to buy a new bed.

I'm looking for a new bed, preferable a divan. My current bed with Slumberland mattress has only lastest 2 years. I like quite a firm mattress, not memory foam as that makes me too warm.
Does anyone have any suggestions, i've looked through the forum but i'm even more confused now. I did see a Silent Night bed but these seem to have bad reviews

I am also hoping to buy a new Bed before the VAT increase (so not much time left!)
I've seen a King Size Milbrook 1400 Divan (Pocket Sprung) for approx £540 - Does anyone know what Milbrook beds are like? I would be grateful for some advice.
My budget is £550 Max

You didn't say what size or what your budget is?
As a general rule stay well away from big brand names, and big chain stores. Instead buy on line from a seller who gives a satisfaction guarantee, as it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.0 -

If you like a firm mattress and no memory foam in it just natural filling like lambswool, silk and is 2000 pocket sprung .
It maybe worth taking a look at the Highgrove Affinity divan.
If you shop round sure you would pick this up for under your budget.
Ps...I am still a great believer in try before you buy.
Hope this helps
I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800 pocket springs. If the mattress contains too many, then to fit them all in they have to be very small, and can get damaged easily.0 -
Thank you for your help. Ive googled for companies who offer the satisfaction guarantee and found the website i'm going to order from. Will be contacting them tommorow as i'm still confused with pocket springs, orthopedics, coil springs etc etc . Beware as some sellers claim to give a satisfaction guarantee, but they won't let you return the item if it has been used. Others will charge return postage. So read their terms and conditions in detail.0 -
The seller i've found has the same name as your user name and has a mattress named after me
. I shall have a browse around the site at some point tommorow.

Hi there Charlie
I am about to purchase a new mattress  and wondered which Slumberland mattress you had that was not good? I want to go for the Memory Coronation Slumberland 5' which is pocket sprung 1600 with memory foam 6 cm. I'm thinking of buying this from mattressman online as he seems to be the cheapest.
Can you let me have some feedback or perhaps Tim Deegan can point me in the right direction as he seems to know much more about mattresses than I do
The others we pondered over were
Relyon 1475 pocket sprung with 5 cm memory foam
Rest assured 2000 pocket sprung with memory foam (from bedsdirect)
My budget is around £650, but ideally I'd like to pay less of course)
Your help is much appreciated. It's my first posting so I hope I'm following the thread, if not, you can shoot me lol
Cheers

To start with, stay well away from big brand names (which includes all those you have mentioned). Go for one made by a smaller independent manufacturer, as they still usually make them by hand, instead of automated production like all the big brands. Also make sure the seller gives a satisfaction guarantee, so that you can return it if you don't like it. Many sellers claim to give a satisfaction guarantee, but they are only complying with distance selling regs, and won't let you actually unpack and use the mattress. So read their terms and conditions carefully.
By following the above you will get far more for your money, and can actually get a top quality two sided (turnable) pocket sprung and memory foam mattress for less than £650.0 -
My only advice on Slumberland would be to stay well away. I have the Slumberland, Gold Seal 2400 at the moment and it's barely lasted 2 years. It was a replacement for another Slumberland I had where the springs came out the side after 8 months
. The Gold Seal was very comfortable for the first 3 months or so but now it has dips and bumps all over it.
Tim has some really good advice on here, but as he says I would stay away from the big brand names. xVirgin CC=£2652, Next= [STRIKE]£102.88,[/STRIKE] Very=£475.60, Natwest=£800, Sainsburys CC=£1777.02, Lloyds CC=£498.29, Lloyds Loan= £13,946.18, Car=£4000Total = [STRIKE]£26,147.23[/STRIKE] £23,849.09:eek:0 -
Thanks Charlie/Tim
Your input is much appreciated. Tim, can you give me some not so big brand names to investigate please? I don't mind doing the research but as it's difficult to find out for which brand you pay over the odds. I haven't yet come across a double sided pocket sprung (with memory foam on either side), but that sounds very interesting. Any link?
I've searched for quite a while now and just want to get something decent, meanwhile, my back hurts every morning because of my current mattress
Cheers all0
