Thanks everyone. I will give it some more thought, as although I think I need counselling I am not sure if Relate is right for me as its more on an individual level than on a relationship level as my BF and I are no longer together and we are both going to seperate parts of America to work for most of next year. I do feel I need to sort out my strength before I go though.

It focuses on what clients want to achieve through therapy rather than on the problem(s) that made them to seek help. The approach does not focus on the past, but instead, focuses on the present and future. The therapist/counselor uses respectful curiosity to invite the client to envision their preferred future and then therapist and client start attending to any moves towards it whether these are small increments or large changes. To support this, questions are asked about the client’s story, strengths and resources, and about exceptions to the problem.
Solution focused therapists believe that change is constant. By helping people identify the things that they wish to have changed in their life and also to attend to those things that are currently happening that they wish to continue to have happen, SFBT therapists help their clients to construct a concrete vision of a preferred future for themselves. The SFBT therapist then helps the client to identify times in their current life that are closer to this future, and examines what is different on these occasions. By bringing these small successes to their awareness, and helping them to repeat these successful things they do when the problem is not there or less severe, the therapists helps the client move towards the preferred future they have identified.

I am currently seeing a relate therapist and I'll be honest it's expensive and I haven't found it particularly helpful.. maybe it's just me but if you can speak to someone for free why pay for it? Try the Samaritans like Clipboard2 suggests.

I had counselling at Relate after getting divorced. It was really helpful and had a big impact on letting me move on with my life.
Regarding cost - I was told there was a sliding scale, and I looked at this and decided how much to offer per session. The scale started from free for people on benefits/very low income and went up to about £35 per session. I think I paid £20 per session but it was well worth it. I only had about 6 sessions so not too expensive in the end.

I'm currently going to Relate and paying £5 a session for individual counselling (it's means tested).
I can't rate my counsellor highly enough, although my issues have gone way past just relationship problems now, she encourages me to continue just to have somewhere to talk and get it all out.
My friend got referred for counselling through her doctor though, when she was going through a painful break up, don't know if that could be of any use to you?Well I can't stand by the side

Have been to my doctor in the past for depression/ anxiety related issues in the past and all they did was throw drugs at me which didn't help at all I am reluctant to seek medical advice0
