    I myself had to purchase a new ps3 from Argos on boxing day because our old one went on the fritz.

    At the time of purchase the assistant did state to me that this product could not be returned for a refund unless it was faulty,at which point i said to her that would be the only reason i would return it anyway.

    Used to work in retail and have to deal with this kind of issue all the time, so I'll add a shop's 'perspective' (don't hate me, just hoping everyone knowing will help them get their replacement/money back in future).

    Unfortunately the case of faulty consoles and items such as ipods always causes issues for store. This is because of the return policy put in by most of the the big companies (microsoft, sony, apple etc) is that is it best for customers to bring faulties to them directly, rather than going through the stores. You then phone them up (I'd always allow customers to use our phone to arrange pick-up of their faulty goods if I was out of stock for an exchange) and they'd sometimes try and wriggle out of it themselves, making customers feel even more like nobody wants to help them. Faulty exchange is sadly usually a big loss-making exercise for shops. If you've bought faulty consoles through a distributor then it's very difficult for a store to get it's money back, hence the reluctance to exchange in-store when the manufacturers tell you to ask customers to go through them...

    Of course a shop does have to give you a refund for a faulty item, sometimes you have to be patient if facing a silly manager, but most shop workers are reasonable!
