haggling at John Lewis

I went to John Lewis today for a washing machine. The one i wanted was £60 cheaper in Argos but they said they didnt price match argos (even though it was a store price). I was surprised at this and just as i was saying i would head off there, he showed me an alternative product by a much better manufacturer. I said it was more £50 more expensive than my budget and he was able to put a £42 discount through (think it worked out at 12% which he said was using a staff discount!!).
They had plenty of customers in the que and it wasnt an old product or anything...so its worth asking!!0 -
I hate haggling even when in Turkey!:o I think if you are buying a few items they are more inclined to give a discount.
Last year when we were buying a suite, bed & headboard and a dining room table & chairs i managed to get a few hundred pounds off the sale price AND 2 bottles of wine! The wine actually meant more to me as my OH was paying for the order!
We bought a new tv on boxing day and once the various wires and cables (gold tipped something or other!) and a £200 wall fitting and sound system was totted up i took a big breath and asked for a discount.. The man said "well we are not meant to be giving any today but i know we make the most on the wall fixing.. is £50 ok?" I smiled sweetly and said if you throw the free fixing i'll pay now" He laughed and added that at £99 so with the £50 a saving of £149... so where's that cheap Ugg boot thread!

Someone said to me recently, you can haggle at Harrods, but not at JL. Seems weird to me.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

I think a distinction needs to be made between "haggling" and requesting a price match.
Approaching a lowly sales assistant in a national chain and "seeing what they can do for you if you pay in a big wadge of cash" is a bit silly tbh.0 -
Cash deals are only really beneficial for small companies, and thats only so they can make the money invisable to the tax man!
Large companies hate cash... They have to pay to bank it, pay someone to count it, pay someone to collect it, spend money to store it.
Why do you think so many places are keen to offer cashback?0 -

Its just a Posh Market Bazaar, look at who owns it ;o))
At least the staff in John Lewis have a vested interest as they all own a small part of it. :T0 -

Very naughty the JL staff using the Partner discount option, and he could well end up in trouble if it was audited! And you could end up with issues should you need to return the item or get service for the item as Partners are not treated as well as normal customers.
However you can haggle at JL, every department manager will have authority to discount various items, use promotions or like they often do they will point you towards are better item at a cheaper price. At least John Lewis you do get honest advice and good aftercare even out or warranty. These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!
I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!0 -
I will haggle in any store I think I'm likely to get something off/extra.
If I was buying large electrical goods in JL I would try it.
I always do in Currys/PC world, all those.0 -
If you wanted the best deal ....
Personally I would have ...
1. checked which magazine online for £1 to find the best dishwasher to suit my situation and budget.
2. used the megashopbot to check for the best prices for my chosen appliance
3. checked the cashback sites for any further cashback
4. checked the discount code sites for more discounts
5. purchase from chosen retailer at best price.
I buy a lot of stuff from John Lewis for various reasons
1. "never knowingly undersold"
2. better , longer warranty
3. customer service is faultless
4. the quality is always better
I have received further discounts and great deals from them in the past and recently but I have always been at the till point actually about to pay for the item (which I genuinely wanted) when I have enquired if there is a chance of either free item/discount for damaged packaging on the last one/ extended warranty . I would not expect any retailer to respond favourably toI asked the sales lady what deal she could offer as I was paying with cash
Started my own business and loving being my own boss
