Currys have (had?) the same disclaimer about the surcharge. (I don't think there's was as high as 2.5% though)

Bear in mind that supermarkets were all routinely offering cashback whenever possible because they don't want to bank too much cash either. There are significant costs involved when you need to employ the likes of Securicor to bank your cash. I'm not sure if cash handling costs as much as 2.5% but supermarkets would typically budget 0.2% for cash loss (till dipping, mistakes etc), then they'll employ people a considerable number of hours each week counting and administering banking lifts.

Everyone wants a piece of the pie, be it card processors, secure couriers or banks.

Just dear in mind that you want to establish a rapport with the sales advisor and part of that is relating to them on their terms. If you ask for a cash discount straight away, you come across just like the last 10 people who got annoyed when they didn't get a discount. Be original, catch them off guard and make them think that you might help them with their sales figures.

I managed to get through the crowds at my local John Lewis. I wanted to buy a dishwasher . I asked the sales lady what deal she could offer as I was paying with cash She looked at me as though she's stepped in something unpleasant and told me John Lewis never do offers like that. I said I'd read about it on this site, but she told me I was wrong. So I went to Currys instead!

Did Currys give you a discount for haggling then?
  • Well Im going to go to JL today and try and get a TV that costs £499 in there but £429 in Curry's just up the road from them. I hope they price match as the JL 5 year free warranty is why i'm going there.
  • It works in Currys ....well sort of a 3 Christmas's ago i went into Currya with cash asked them to price match against comets whihc they did and said as i was paying cash could i have a discount ......dont ask dont get...i never got a discount but i did get the extended warrently work £70ish thrown in free....i was please with that.....
but i have since bought other things from curry's and when faulty had a nightmare taking them back customer services was very poor

If someone at Currys gives you a "cash" discount, then all they are doing is giving you a discount and letting you believe it was for cash. No Currys manager will ever say "Well if there paying cash, then we'll do it". Believe me, your payment method makes no difference to them.

I remember a few occasions when I had some discount budget to spare and used them on customers who just happened to have asked for a cash discount. It makes no sense to tell them why they're getting the discount if they believe it was for paying cash in the first place.

IIRC there is something in Martins book about haggling at John Lewis, but it was a heavily discounted item that they were basically just wanting to get rid of - so the opportunity was there. I think it was a bathroom cabinet or something.

I imagine there is no chance of haggling what so ever at the start of the sale when the tills are ringing.

Maybe at the end of the sale if for example there is just one of this model left and it is the display one and has some scuffs on it, then perhaps if you speak to the right person they can knock a bit off.

You're not going to get a cash discount at JL though - its perhaps even more hassle for them than a credit card.

My Mum used to work in a decorating (paint / wallpaper etc) shop and they offered a 2.5% discount for paying cash as that's the commision they paid to the credit card companies if people paid by card.

I'm sure there was some challenge to the supermarkets about this a while ago where someone said that they should be able to get the same discount by paying cash, or at least someone paying by card should be charged 2.5% more. I think the supermarkets arguement was that they just absorbed it as part of their core costs and so they didn't need to offer a discount.

The fee for credit cards is very clear, 2.5% normally. But to say that Cash costs nothing to process is not true, especially when your handling large volumes (like in a department store). You have to have safe's, drob-box's, cash loss, run a cash office, pay for security pick up of the money etc. For large companies cash normally will cost more to process than cards!
  • Well I got my TV for £71 less than marked due to the price match. The lovely lady checked currys website and showed the TV as out of stock everywere in Glasgow. I thought damb it but she said she would give me it as had to wait 10 min for a sales rep and could have been in stock at that point. £71 off and 5 year warranty. Great result
