I'll try that thanks - fingers crossed!0

Following on from all this - wouldn't you think that massive corporations like Microsoft and Compaq would have more extensive opening hours for their helplines!!! 8am to 6pm not very impressive - anyone would think that they didn't care...............:rolleyes:0

Hello, I can probably help you - I work for some big company fixing pc's all day.
A few questions...
Is it an old computer?
What operating system is it? (windows XP they're all assuming)
When you say you ran a system recovery did that put everything back to factory settings (and lose all your files etc.)?
2 things I'd add, are if it's Windows 98 machine it may give the error you've described...
but
If it's windows XP (I'd guess it is), and you've done a recovery then I'd guess that probably your PC has Norton Internet Security on it and it's possibly acting in it's normal way and blocking any new connection (like to the internet).
If you have recovered to factory settings and it has norton, then right click on the norton box in the task bar (bottom right of the screen, little globe icon - either yellow or blue/green) and disable the firewall.
Then try again. That should allow you on the internet.0 -

It's about a year old and its XP Home and yes we had Norton Security - and Yes we put everything back to factory settings. Didn't lose data but had to reinstall some things. Will try this asap before I phone Compaq. Thanks0 -
I have to say I think compaq will be totally unhelpful. At worst they'll tell you to phone onetel, at best they'll tell you to do a full destructive recovery.
The destructive recovery will work, but you'll obviously lose all your data.
If disabling norton doesn't work then there's a couple of other things to try, but it starts to get a little more complicated.
1st off check modem is installed propery.
To do this - hit start button then click run. Type in "devmgmt.msc" without the inverted commas. when list appears make sure you can see nothing with yellow exclamation marks, and if you click little "+" next to network adapters you should see one referring to the broadband modem (speedtouch or something like that)
2nd Try Creating a new manual connection (trust me)
Click start--> control panel--> network connections
click Create new connection
click next
click connect to internet then next.
click setup manually then next
click Connect using dial-up modem (Yes I know it's broadband - have faith) then next
Type in "test" for name of ISP, then next
phoine number - 0,38 next
username and password you should already have...and leave those 2 boxes ticked and click next, then finish
Then double click on the "test" to see if it works. If it connects ok, then all is fine. if not then let me know what happens.0 -

Correct! Compaq were useless!!! Automated voice directing me to their website aaarrrgghh!
We have actually already tried the manual set-up you describe above (guided by Onetel support) but no success.
The disabling Norton solution didn't work either.
Still at a loss what to do.........0 -
Seems incorrect above.
This is how I have given to others and it's worked.
1. Click Start 2. Click on Run 3. In Run Type in the command, rasphone 4.
Click on OK 5. Click on New 6. The Select, Dial-up a private Network 7.
If the member has more than one modem, select the Globalspan USB ADSL WAN
Modem 8. Type in the number as 0,38 9. Click Finish 10. Now Select AOL TEST From the Drop Down and Click
Connect 11. Enter the username and password for the Whoosh Test 12. To
Repeat a Test Run Rasphone again, and Select AOL TEST again
Basically, I think you have to o.k. it with them on the help line, first. But below is how to set up anyway.
To set up, start>click run>type in 'rasphone' (without quotes) ok> Select new then 'Dial-up a private Network' type in 0,38 then name connection, finish.
Goto my computer>control panel>Network Connections then right click your new connection, create shortcut, it asks to place on desktop, accept yes.
When it's on desktop double click type in your username and password in password box then select anyone that uses the computer or just you and if it does connect then you're in if not phone your isp.0 -

Thanks for your reply (and to everone else for all the replies!!) but you mention AOL but we're with Onetel - was it a typo or is your info just for AOL?0
