Broadband connection problem

Can anyone help please?
Switched on our computer the other day and had a message saying that Windows could not open because of a corrupt config file.

We ran System Recovery and most things were fine – had to reinstall the printer etc but that all went ok. The broadband connection had to be reinstalled (onetel) but when going through that process with the original CD the process failed well into the procedure.

The connection gets as far as “connected to remote computer and verifying user name and password” but then fails saying “connection to remote computer could not be established error message 0720”.
I’ve had several phone calls to the onetel support line but they can’t solve the problem. They told me to phone Microsoft – their hours are (unhelpfully) 8am to 6pm but when I phoned them today they told me to try Compaq – their hours are (more unhelpfully) 8-30 to 6pm. I’m going to try to get home in time to do that but has anybody else experienced this error message or problem?

When you open your login screen.

    Have you entered you password?

As if you check the radio buton (thats the little check circle) that says allow anyone to use connection it keeps password stored and if you check, only for me it doesn't save password.

    Check that.

Can't understand why your technical support for your isp cannot help you, they should have a whole list of error messages.

Me neither - I've had 3 calls to them and asked specifically about the error message and was told that "its not a common one" .............. how useful!!!

Yes password and user name are entered correctly and I have been through countless procedures with onetel support to check settings etc. They claim its a corrupt file.

Do a repair install of windows and go update it after and see where you're at then.

These suggestions sound a little advanced for me  - looks like I might have to call in "a man who can" (unless I get somewhere with Compaq tonight). It's so weird - everything else seems to be working ok! I am pretty annoyed that Onetel can't be more productive. The staff have all been polite and as helpful as they can - but they don't seem have much expertise beyond their broadband settings!!!

    Try this;

ERROR 720 - INVALID NETWORK PROTOCOLS

Delete the connection and make a new connection through the wizard.

You may need to turn off NetBEUI and IPX/SPX.

    1. Double-click My Computer
    2. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking folder.
    3. Right-click the dial-up connection icon you created.
    4. Choose Properties from the menu.
    5. Click the Server Type tab.
    6. If you have NetBEUI or IPX/SPX turned on, remove the checkmarks from the boxes next to their names, leaving only the box next to TCP/IP checked.
    7. Make sure that the box labelled Log on to network is unchecked. If this box is checked, your session may time-out before your modem can establish a connection

Changes in the computers configuration, for example installing a new modem, would make changes to the TCP/IP settings.

    Reinstall TCP/IP
