They have probably had a lousy day sales wise so decided to go early. This has happened to me when I worked in retail. How do you know they are getting paid for the 20 minutes, and there is no sneaking out without head office knowing if they have security cameras as the cameras are recording 24hrs with the time on the screen. Big brother is always watching you in retail.

If we close early or open late we get a phone call from HO as the alarm records it and sends the times it was activated/deactivated via e-mail.
This has been the case in all of the various shops I have worked in. I think they were told to go early.
Every now and again (Very rarely!) if we haven't seen a customer for a long time (say an hour or two) we are told we can shut up and go home.
It is quite normal in retail for the cashing up to be done in your own time. By leaving at 4pm they might have been leaving at the time they stopped being paid for once :-)0 -
no one would have been complaining if it had been you working inside the store and getting to finish a little early, its christmas stopping being a humbug!!!Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0

i work in retail and am never allowed to close before the advertised time but it never ceases to amaze me how many saddos come shopping at 3-55 on a sunday and then dont actually know what they want !This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I actually said Probably been paid, they might not have and they might have had a reasonable excuse for shutting up earlier but he principle stays that just because its 'Christmas' (which it isn't by the way, Christmas is on the 25th of December!) isn't an excuse to shut up earlyAlways ask ACAS0

Buckie, Aberdeenshire, right ?
How's the snow, was the weather a factor ?0 -
Buckie Banffshire just north of Aberdeenshire. Snow nearly all gone and nice and sunny but -2 just now.
My bad. Can never remember where the boundary lies.
If weather, public transport/staff concerns weren't an issue then yeah, complain. If they're advertising their opening hours then not keeping to them, causing you inconvenience, then yeah go for it.0
