What can else can i freeze in bulk apart from spag bol?!

Options
Hi there! Im looking for some inspiration for the new year and was wondering whether anyone could help me :) Im a student living in a student house and have access to one (quite deep) freezer drawer. Last term i made up a large batch of spag bol (using oats which i learnt from here! thanks for that little tip!) and turned half into chilli and half into bol. This worked really well as im a student nurse and am often really tired when i get in so it was great to have an easy meal when i got back.

I was wondering what everyone else bulk cooked and froze apart from mince? I was thinking of maybe doing some soup but wasnt sure how this would freeze? Any other ideas? :)

Thanks in advance :T

I bulk cook chicken breasts ( or any part really), in the slow cooker with a stock cube and some water. Once cooked I break it into strips and freeze in portion bags. These dont take long to defrost when you come in , heat the chicken make some rice etc then just add some curry sauce, korma, etc -. Quick , easy and tasty.

I make Lentil Soup , put into bags and it freezes great too.

  • lasagne, I use plastic trays from the supermarket, which are washable and microwavable, I make curry and rice for tea, make xtra mix together and freeze that for a quick meal. Stew and I also liqudise stew to make a chunky soup which i freeze. If i do a roast chicken i strip the rest of the meat off like the legs ect put it in a bag and freeze as its great for quick meals. Soups freezes well just make sure its air tight in a bag or container But with room to expand! Tupperware type containers are good for this. Homemade pizzas freeze quite well i buy fresh bases make the pizzas and cover in clingfilm. If your never sure then just try freezing a little amount of somthing then a week later cook it or defrost in fridge over night and see how it is.
or tuna bake, tuna, broccoli covered in homemade cheese sauce, mash potato over the top and baked, that freezes o.k as does cottage/shepards pie.

curry freezes fine but just be careful if you coconut milk as that may split when you defrost it.

Soup freezes fine, just don't add cream or anything until you've defrosted it.
  • Hi,

I freeze most things to be honest! Its a bit of a joke in my family LOL

Things I made for the freezer though:

    Spag sauce
    Chilli
Lasagne (made up in foil containers, whack in the oven when you get in. Brilliant standby)
Stews - any kind. Chicken, beef in stout, pork, sausage. All work well
Soup - veg soup made with what's looking sorry in the fridge, ham hock soup (there's a brilliant thread on here with what you can make with just one ham hock!) You can make soup with almost anything
Cooked chicken - whether leftover from a roast, or chicken breasts I deliberately cook to freeze
Curry - any style, most meats. Including leftover takeaway
I do a "tuscan bean stew" with loads of tinned beans which freezes and reheats really well
Roast meat in gravy - any leftover beef or other roasts in a shallow plastic container with the leftover gravy. Then all you need is some veg or a jacket potato etc.

Hope that gives you some ideas. But honestly, most things freeze.

Quiche freezes really well too. Just make it. Chop it into slices, wrap and freeze. I like it as it's easy to defrost/heat and you can eat it with most things.

I also freeze pretty much everything...curries, stews, soups, rice (if there's any leftover from a meal), pies, lasagne, bolognese, chilli...etc. etc.

I've just made a pie out of the leftover turkey & ham from Christmas dinner. There was too much for one pie so I've bagged up the excess filling and bunged it in the freezer for another day...I'll just tip it in a dish and top with pastry when I defrost it.
