I gave Coco bones when he was a kitten. Simply because I had started giving them to Missy & I think he felt he was missing out on the action, he had absolutely no problems eating them (about 12 weeks old on his first try) and still absolutely loves them. I started off just removing the meat from the bone & giving it to him in small pieces but his first chicken wing was completely devoured! I also gave them scrambled egg as kittens (no milk or butter added - just one egg whisked and popped in microwave for a minute) they absolutely love it & I still give it to them on occasion and they really enjoy it. I have read that they can eat a raw egg (shell and all) but don't think I could stomach this!

I think that the younger you try your cat with raw food, the sooner they will become accustomed to it, Coco certainly took to it a lot quicker than Missy who was still tempted to eat more of the dry food I put down.

And ask a homeopathic vet and he would tell you differently.

A, C & E vitamins are antioxidents & they kill free radicals. This is an online dictionary definition of free radicals:-
An atom or group of atoms that has at least one unpaired electron and is therefore unstable and highly reactive. In animal tissues, free radicals can damage cells and are believed to accelerate the progression of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and age-related diseases.
Which brings me to mention one more thing off topic before I go- search for the information about the extaordinary number of cats developing cancerous grows at the base of their heads- the injection region, believed to be caused by innoculations.

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this subject and leave it at that :D

Well...I have been feeding raw for a few months but now the only thing they seem to like is chunks of tongue, chunks of rabbit with bone and chunks of ox heart. It's becoming a pain and some will eat stuff that others won't. I caved in tonight and just gave them a pouch of Natures Menu each - at least they all ate it!

I expect the squits anytime soon......

My Darling Jackson died last Friday - so sad to see one empty bowl at food time :( Sniff....

The main change has been a new European definition of meat for labelling purposes, which is different from the definition currently used in the UK. The new definition defines meat as 'skeletal muscle with naturally included or attached tissue', and sets specific limits for the amount of fat and connective tissue (i.e., rind, tendon, sinew, skin etc.) allowed (see table below). The definition specifically excludes MRM, feet and trotters, tail, and head meat but includes cheeks (Masseters). It also excludes non-muscle cuts such as liver, kidney, heart etc. Products are still allowed to contain all of these ingredients - they will just need to be described differently, and they cannot count towards the declared meat content.

Glad this thread has been pulled up again, as I'd forgotten to read the links. Anyway, I've had a quick scan now. This link seems to be refering to labelling regulations concerning 'meat' content in human foods. So, is it the same for pet food?

Petal - so sorry to hear about Jackson.

Tomatoes of all kinds are toxic to cats, as are the actual tomato plants.

Good question, I did not find the definitive answer but all the evidence points to it. I looked up the definitions of derivatives and meat meal, and recommendations for pet food labelling generally: UK pet food is certainly supposed to contain meat from human grade animals. I came to the conclusion that the manufacturers would not be allowed to label anything as being 'chicken' or 'fresh fish' if it wasn't exactly that - otherwise why on earth would Whiskas/ Go Cat/ Felix admit to only 4% meat?
