3 mobile - caution when upgrading to a smart phone
Hi, well, they managed to do it again.
Just when I thought I'd scored a great deal for recontracting, they managed to get the last laugh.
I upgraded my tariff and got a HTC Hero. My previous tariff did not have inclusive internet and the phone was a standard handset. The new phone is smart phone and always connected to the internet.
It turns out that my new tariff does not start until my next payment date (16th). This has left me with a bill for internet usage of £21 (after 4 days). I'm also not able to use my new phone until the 16th without a ridiculous bill for internet use.
Although I can't remember, I expect I was told about the tariff and charges. It just seems ridiculous that they can send out smart phones without immediate changes to tariffs.
I hope this information will be useful for others.

I'm pretty sure you can use the phone by just turning the mobile internet off on the phone.
If you have wi-fi at home or use McDonald's, Whetherspoons etc you can surf the net using wi-fi facility.0 -
Thanks for suggestion Reeves. I had a poke about on the internet and found this advice:
1. Hold down the on/off button for a few seconds until the 'Phone Options' pops up.
2. Select 'Mobile network' and ensure it says 'Connect to Internet is OFF'.
This will turn 3G/Edge off, leaving just WI-FI when available and your network operator.
This should be applicable to anyone with a HTC Hero that needs to avoid 3G internet connection.0 -

You can also put a widget on the home screen for turning the mobile data on/off - hold down your finger on an empty part of the home screen and it's under "HTC Widgets" and "Settings"0
