As soon as you take a photo, you own the copyright, no if's or but's about it.

I do like the idea of re-naming your stolen image, then using one advertising your own biz in place of the original.

And im sure you can get a programe where it stops people right clicking on your pictures.

Unfortunately this doesn't stop people using print screen to get the same images.

Or using firefox which still gives you the right click menu (not that I've ever used it on a certain site owned by News International Group).
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

Im not sure theres a lot you can do but you can get free programes where you can water mark your pictures, that will stop people in the future.
Irfanview for one, but most photoeditors will do this. (Put the watermark on a separate layer and make it semi-transparent)

If you want to annoy your legitimate users. But anyone with javascript turned off won't even notice the program. It certainly won't stop Firefox users downloading from Tools/Page Info.
If you take alot of pictures then you can buy programes that will watermark your pics in bulk.
    Irfanview does this for free.

This is what I thought, that's why I don't have a copyright notice on the site.

Great idea about changing the image if they'd hotlinked, but no, sadly it's on their own server :(

Thanks for all the helpful replies! I will have to watermark the images to prevent this in future, but in the mean time I have also contacted the website designer and asked them if they were provided with the image, or did they obtain it themselves! Here are the images, as someone asked to see them -

My website with the photo we took -

The company who have used our image -

Many thanks again for the replies :)

Because the image purloiner is a proper bricks'n'mortar business, what I strongly suspect happened is the website designer thought he would rustle up some/any images for a quick job. Once you contact them I'm sure the image will disappear. How did you detect this by the way?

It may not help much, but I think it's definitely worth having a copyright notice in the footer of each page - it at least sets out the ground rules.
There are not just the pictures to consider, there's the text descriptions and the website design.

It was brought to my attention by someone (in my firm) who had randomly come across the other website and recognised the image.

The email I sent to the website designer (of the irish firm) today, says please remove this image as I haven't given permission for it to be used. Will have to wait until tomorrow at least, as it's Sunday and probably not working today.

Do a print screen so you have a saved copy and send them an invoice for the use off your image, £10k should do it and see what happens ;p
