SKY+ HD and a confused pensioner

Options
My 70 year old mother-in-law who has had SKYTV for donkey's years phoned SKY two weeks ago to enquire about the new SKY+HD package and what was the difference between the two systems. The salesman said it was a much better picture than the old sky box. So she decided to upgrade.

However she could not see any difference in the picture quality and telephoned my wife who told her it won't be any better, you don't have an HD TV. Well she said, SKY didn't tell me I had to have one, and the chap who installed it never mentioned it either. My mother-in-law gets easy confused and their is no way she can afford to splash on a new HDTV.

We have telephoned SKY on her behalf in an attempt to get this contract squashed on the basis it was miss-sold. SKY appear to be giving us the run around.

Can my mother-in-law be held to this 12 month contract.

It isn't "miss sold". How is the salesman suppose to know what shes got. If she
is enquiring about SKY+HD then he would she has a HD tv.

Surely you could have told her before upgrading etc.

Your mum initiated the upgrade to HD so I doubt it could be construed as missold.

What TV does she have? Most of the LCD televisions are HD ready. I have a cheap 15" TV that is HD ready.

I can't see why not as Sky have done nothing wrong - they gave your mother-in-law what she asked for. If she already has Sky TV it is only an extra £10pm for the HD package - if she really does not want it she can cancel after a year.
  • Try emailing Sky Chief Executive jeremy.darroch@bskyb.com.

Stress your mother-in-laws age, vunerability and general confusion!

Perhaps the installer thought your Mum was getting a new HD TV and it had not yet arrived.

I am pleased to report back the SKY have now agreed to remove SKY+ HD decoder, on the 31/12/09 and reinstate her old subscription to SKY which she can receive through her own SKY box that she bought long ago.

Makes a lovelly change to have an happy ending. Thank you SKY.

Almost makes me want to ditch my Virginmedia Cable TV.....<slap> NOT.
  • Nice to hear that a bit of common sense sense has been used and that they haven't stuck to the terms of the contract. Does make you wonder if someone will now end up with a used HD box though or will it go in to the refub chain?
