Dell Vostro 1000 DVD Drive

I was just about to load Windows 7 on my laptop but the DVD Drive doesn't recognise any disks. Is it possible to repair it?

If not can I put the Windows 7 CD on a usb memory stick and upgrade that way?

go into device manager and look at what it shows by the DVD drive entry
also look for any yellow warning symbols in device manager
  • no yellow warning symbols. It says the drive is working properly.

There are 2 entries for DVD/CD Roms perhaps the first one is a logical drive? The 1st one is a scsi cd rom device the 2nd one is a DVD RW ATA device (the actual physical one)

You can boot up with the usb stick, yes, but that's gonna have to be one heck of a capacity for the contents of Windows 7

    ^Yes, and more!
  • Is it possible to repair the drive? Is it economically viable?

Remind me of again of the Dell Vostro drive? Is it a standard tray or slot-loading?

^Not sure what the Dell charge would be (warranty?); unless you're happy to replace yourself ;)
