Sometimes I think ellers overprice their jewellery because they think they can. Good luck to them if they can sell it and find people to pay the money. I am happy to provide budget jewellery without running at a loss to myself. I only make it because I love it, and the fact I can sell it is a bonus and helps buy more supplies. Just wish hmrc would understand that lol rather than making us fill out a tax return every year for it.
  • Totally agree yukki, but rules are rules lol! I`m the same I love making jewellery, its one of my hobbies and like you say it is a bonus to sell anything! Compare our prices to say Topshop and we have something beautiful and handmade for a fraction of the price.

  • Can anyone help me with the sterling silver v silver plated dilemna I have please?

I'd like to make a Pandora bracelet for my daughter's birthday. She will only be turning 10, but has a love of bracelets and I thought this would be a lovely way to mark the occasion. I had thought I'd buy a sterling silver bracelet and beads, so that she can keep it for years. But the smallest sized bracelets only seem to come in silver plate, that I have found.

What are people on here using; sterling silver or silver plated items? How long do the plated items last without tarnishing?

And if anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be a bonus. Thank you. x

I bought myself a silver plated one last year and it was rubbish to be honest. It may have been the seller, but I would have been embarrased to give as a gift.

Jilly beads sell a 7.5 inch sterling silver bracelet for £14.82 but this is a lobster clasp fastening and not a hinged clasp.
    Also try here http://www.diamondkids.co.uk/teenlist.asp

Silver plated snake isn`t great for something intended for a keepsake but as a fashion bracelet is fine.

I'm not exactly a jewellery maker, but have spend the afternoon with a pair of fine pliers and some old jewellery making up new stuff. I bought some silver plated chain earlier this morning. I have got two new long necklaces with charms on for next to nothing, and another one to make up! i love costume jewellery but it can quickly get very expensive x
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

I've been reading this thread with great interest (thanks to all those posting pics of their inspirational jewellery) and today was my first attempt at making a memory wire bracelet.

I can't seem to make the loop at the end of the wire. I made the loop OK when I started the bracelet, but I'm finding the end impossible. Two reasons:

    1. I can't stop the beads sliding around and moving toward the end of the wire, thus making the spare wire at the end shorter (iyswim).

    2. Suspect I'm trying to make the loop too near the last bead, but not sure how to do this so there's no empty wire near the end loop ('cos then the beads will be sliding around - or is this OK?)

I've had about 4 attempts so far and the bracelet's getting shorter and shorter!

Also, I'm quite surprised at how many beads I've used. I thought it might be a very cheap thing to make, but it's cost about £15 in beads just for one bracelet.**

How do you make your end loops? TIA

**Edited to add: I've actually counted and worked out the cost of the beads properly and they came to £3.69 plus 12p for the memory wire. Just call me Drama Queen :o
