Vodaphone contract downgrade?

Hi.
I'm struggling with a lot of debt problems at the moment, and I have a very expensive phone contract - £40 a month plus £10 insurance. The insurance isn't a problem, I've been told I can downgrade that down to £5 a month but I need to downgrade the contract. I don't use all my texts/calls/unlimited internet. I've had the contract since September. Are they likely to let me do this, on account of the fact I have money problems due to ill health (I am bi-polar) and literally cannot afford to pay £40 a month for my phone?
Thanks a lot.

Hi,
Generally you can downgrade vodafone contracts after you have served 9 months of the contract, you can usually downgrade by £5 a month down to £20 a month. So it would take 4 months to get from £40 to £20.
You need to ring vodafone on 191 and speak to customer services about downgrading.
Over your phone insurance i am confused, £10 is alot anyway, but i was not aware you could downgrade insurance, can you explain the jump from £10 to £5 further. If you have a pricey handset like Nokia N-Series, Blackberry etc, you do need insurance just in-case you lose it.
An alternative option is to buy a cheap £50 PAYG handset and use that, sell your current handset and stop the insurance all together.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0 -
Check with your bank account re the Insurance as some offer it as an add-on for less than £100
