Mobile with Contract as a Present
Hello
I'm wondering if anyone has got any advice or knowledge please.
My lovely husband has bought me a Blackberry for Christmas. He has however bought it under contract (24mths) but didn't realise I still have 10 months to go on my current contract. Is there anything we can do about this in terms of returning the phone and cancelling the contract? The phone was bought 14 December, but the SIM etc hasn't been activated. It was bought through Phones4U and I've noticed on their paperwork there's a clause (which he's ticked) which states Phones4U do not operate the 14 day guarantee. The phone operator will be Orange. My husband did explain it would be for a gift and the sales girl has written what we need to do on the back of the contract in terms of transferring owners name etc.
Any advice (if there is any) would be most welcome as this is quite a pricey mistake otherwise and has slightly damped the Christmas spirit here.
Thank you
Claire

If he bought it online, you have some protection under DSR. If he bought it in a shop, unless anyone has any gems, I believe you're stuck with it.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

It was bought in store unfortunately.
If I am 'stuck' with it, is there any advice on getting out of my Vodafone contract early? I'd really like to keep my phone number, so this might be the only option and I'm reckoning, if I can recoup some of the money by selling my old phone - not a great one, but anything is better than nothing.
Also, my husband has bought insurance with the Blackberry at £9.99 per month. This does have a 14 day cooling off period. Can I get this cheaper? Any good deals about?0 -

And re the Voda contract, call them up, see how low you can drop the tariff, change to that, then pay it all off in one go.
Hell, if your OH is paying for 2 years of contract for you, why should you care if you have to pay off the 10 months of Voda that you were gonna pay anyway? You still get 14 months of free service0 -
Vodafone only give you 7 days (iirc) to PAC your number, so you need to be quick if you want to transfer it. Depending when he bought it, that may already have passed. The old network will require you to pay an early termination fee, which is usually months remaining on contract x the monthly fee (e.g. 10x£30 = £300). You could hopefully recoup some of that by the sale of your existing handset.
The insurance is a rip off. Cancel it immediately and Google "mobile phone insurance". You can get it for around £4/month if you shop around. Check your household insurance doesn't automatically cover you as well.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Yep, your stuck with them both now.
Do you know anyone who would want your old phone + your 10 months remaining contract, i believe vodafone do allow change of ownership.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0
