Thanks for starting this thread, I am having the same problem setting up my new Sony laptop and new Thompson wireless router (PlusNet) tho no desktop to complicate matters. Old lappy works fine with new broadband, new lappy works fine with an ethernet cable to new router OR wirelessly connecting to my dad's broadband ... will show this thread to my 'technical support'! :p

Now you have it connected, try running through the setup procedure again, as set out in the bumf that came with it.

Does your new Thomson router's wireless network appear on the list of available networks on your new laptop?

Yes: the new laptop (Sony, Windows 7) will connect to the router but will not connect to the internet wirelessly. Both an iphone and my old lappy (Fujitsu Siemens, Vista) will connect to the net via the Thomson router wirelessly. My 'technical support' (brother and father!) have just both spent an hour and a half changing settings on the Sony and setting up the router again, they have spoken to a friend who works in IT and to PlusNet support and still nothing.

This is in an e-mail from my brother, does that sound like he is on the right track please? I will post again with the results in case it helps the OP. :o

"It's the router that is not forwarding dns properly.

Set it to use dns server = 208.67.222.222 (Tested and works, by me personally.)

If that doesn't work, put the router back to how it was.

Then setup a static ip address for the adapter -

Go to Network and Sharing Center. Click local area connection. Click Properties. Double click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).

    Set it as follows:

Ip address = same as router config page, usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 but change the last part to 150 -

for example, if router is 192.168.0.1 make ip address 192.168.0.150
if router is 192.168.1.1 make ip address 192.168.1.150

    Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0

Default gateway = router's config page address same as before (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1)

    Preferred dns server = 208.67.222.222

    Hit ok. Test.

Disable then enable the adapter. Test."

To be honest if you can connect to the internet via the router via wireless on a different laptop and iPhone then it's not going to be anything connected to the router.

I did find this page from Sony US (can't see why it wouldn't be the same for the UK) - http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&externalId=C1007553&fes=true
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

Thanks for your reply and I will forward that link to my brother. :T I didn't see how it could be the router's fault either, but my new laptop connects wirelessly to my dad's broadband without issue, so it seems that is working OK too .... so that begs the question is it human error? :o It would be quite impressive for three of us to have spent a total of five man hours failing to follow basic instructions!

  • Thanks for all your help

Dave...I rang my ISP today and within minutes they had me on-line....the password they said I should have put in wasn't the one I thought I set up my broadband with...even though the router configured ok with the one I put in....it's one of their own passwords...starts with the word 'line'...so once the correct password was entered then both desktop and laptops were up and running

I've done it via an ethernet cable to my desktop...I have a wireless adaptor for it but I'm a bit nervy about changing it over now!

Thanks again for taking the time to help me
