Hi
I've been given a laptop for christmas and have been attempting to set up wireless internet in my house for it using a Thomson wireless router. I've followed all the steps in the guide, and entered my broadband username & password (in step 7). The summary screen appears, but when I click 'start' on order to connect to the internet, it comes up with a message saying the DSL can't connect, or something along those lines. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, and it's very frustrating.
My desktop PC uses broadband, and whilst I try to connect the laptop up to wireless, the internet on the desktop stops working. I've had to unplug the wireless router in order to re-connect on the desktop in order to type this.
Please help ):

Hi, Happy Christmas, You are working to hard, setting up when you have BB already running. Stop there. The wireless is either running by default or not. Go into the router on the desktop. in the address just type the routers address, like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 (dont use thompsom) The password might be admin. Look for the Wireless tab and turn it on, with no security to start with and go to the laptop and look for your SSID then you are in. Set up security later.0

As totalsolutions says, you don't enter the ISP (broadband) username and password to connect to the wireless signal.
Am I right in saying that you have a Thomson wireless router and that your desktop PC is connected to it with a network cable?
If you have the Thomson wireless router and a modem for your PC both connected to the line, then they won't and would explain why you can only get one to work at a time.0 -
Merry Christmas to you all
That last post was from my daughter...I bought her a sony laptop and we are both struggling to set it up to the internet.!.......with the laptop I have a Thomson wireless router and an ethernet cable and some filters. In the house we have a desktop computer with madasafish broadband. the instructions are a little baffling...do I need a wireless adaptor?
wouldn't it be good to be able to open it up and it works! :rotfl:0 -
You've not answered my question. How is the desktop PC connected to the telephone line?WaxiesDargle wrote: »Merry Christmas to you all

Or when you say "Madasafish broadband" are you saying it uses a router/modem provided by Madasafish?0 -

I have a computer that I am using to type this..(not laptop), it has broadband by madasafish via a modem...I've had it ages...that is all fine.
I bought my daughter a sony laptop for christmas.
I asked madasafish to send me a router and they did.
With that router came a power supply, an ethernet cable, a broadband cable and microfilters....
Bottom line is...we've taken the laptop out of the box...tried to decipher the instructions on connections and are getting nowhere...it's ok I know someone who can get it running after christmas. Thanks0 -
As you now have a second computer in the household that you wish to connect to the internet simulataneously, you don't use the modem currently connected to the desktop anymore. Instead, you connect both PCs (desktop and laptop) using the new router.WaxiesDargle wrote: »I have a computer that I am using to type this..(not laptop), it has broadband by madasafish via a modem...I've had it ages...that is all fine.
A router is essentially a junction to connect more than one machine. Think of it as being a roundabout or traffic lights.
The key thing is you cannot attach two separate modems to one line at the same time which is what you were doing and why the internet connection on the desktop dropped out when you attached the router to your line.
The first step is to put the laptop to one side. Replace the modem which is connected to the PC with an ethernet cable. Put the wireless router in its place; it will have one or more ethernet sockets on it for you to connect to it wired (rather than wireless).
I gather that Madasafish sent you this wireless router, so it will either be fully set-up, or will, most probably, have instructions on how to get it up and running (this may just entail entering your username and password for your broadband service). If you have already followed them, then it may work already. The reason you could never have had success before was because the desktop PC's modem and the (modem inside the) router were interfering with one another.
In actual fact, wireless routers work wired as well. What you will have is two PCs connected to your broadband. The junction is the router. The road off it to the desktop PC is via a cable and the road to the laptop will be via the ether.
Get the desktop PC working on the internet via the new router first, and then look at setting up the wireless part second.0 -
Thank you for you excellent reply Dave...I'll try all that later and come back and let you know the outcome.0

ok...I connected the router to my desktop via ethernet cable (having disconnected the original modem) and also taken the phone line out of the original modem and connected it to the router (is this correct?). there are 5 lights on the router...Power,Ethernet, Wireless,Broadband and Internet...4 light up green...but the Internet light flashes from red to no light..
When my desktop is connected to the internet there are two arrows that are green..they are red when disconnected...they are showing red....I have put it back to normal modem mode to type this
hope I've explained that ok0 -
I think you need to set up you madasafish username and password in the router. To do this I would connect your desktop via an ethernet cable and follow the instructions suppl;ied with the router. I suspect that you will need to open up a browser session and go to the address http://192.168.1.1 (or whetever the instructions tell you.). You will then be prompted for a username and password to log in to the router's administration pages. Once logged in, there will be a section for setting up the ISP connection
What make/model of router is it?
Did it come with a CD - this CD might have a setup "Wizard" that does this stuff for youChris Elvin0 -
As elvch01 says, you need to put your username and password for your broadband service into the router. It should explain this in the setup literature you have got with it. To access the setup pages for the router, goto http://192.168.1.254/ in your browser with your PC is connected to the powered up router.WaxiesDargle wrote: »ok...I connected the router to my desktop via ethernet cable (having disconnected the original modem) and also taken the phone line out of the original modem and connected it to the router (is this correct?). there are 5 lights on the router...Power,Ethernet, Wireless,Broadband and Internet...4 light up green...but the Internet light flashes from red to no light..0
