Silly question about digital tv (sky/virgin etc)

Options
Do you HAVE to pay for phone line rental to have sky or virgin?

In the rented property we're in, there are phone line boxes for both cable and sky but husband and I really don't need a phone line to use for calls etc and begrude paying for line rental just to have digital TV.

Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks

  • sorry that's what I meant, you would need a bt landline for 12 months, and that would be cool to get vouchers too!
  • actually it may be worth double checking with sky to see what they say!
  • with virgin it looks like you can have either fibre optic (cable) or phone line (national) service. looking at the costs over a year, it actually appears cheaper to pay more a month and have no phone line (cable) than have the phone line service!!!

thinking about it - we can't have SKY coz our landlady won't let us put up a sky dish!!!
  • oh what a pity they won't, was just thinking, my colleague got sky installed last year and she doesn't have a landline

think VM is the only provider where you can opt out of having a phone line
we have a land line but i haggled the price down so its sort of 'free'
  • our landlady said that if we want sky, we have to connect to the flat upstairs's sky box and pay the owners upstairs (we live in a maisonette) a "handling" fee.

first of all i aint prepared to pay our upstairs neighbours a fee for anything and secondly after speaking to sky, they won't install a new connection into an existing box!

wonder if I could haggle a free V+ HD box from VM (or at least cheaper!). In our last house we had sky +, truly invaluable! But to pay £75 for the box from VM AND £5 a month if we have the Medium or Large TV package seems a bit steep. Especialy when the Sky + box was free!

    Utter ba11s!!!

By the upstairs having Sky your landlady has already given a Wayleave consent so you can get your own Sky system installed.
Your landlady does'nt know wth she's talking about & is trying it on!
(I have edalt with wayleave agreements in the past when working for NTL & Sky when doing pre-install surveys)

You can have Sky without the phone by paying £25 (or it was when I worked for them) for a 'No Phone Install'.
With a phoneline,Sky's boxes are/were subsidised by BIB (British Interactive Broadcasting) but without the phone, you cant use their services, hence the £25 charge.

Its just as cheap to have virgin with a phoneline as without

Sorry you don't understand. The landlady doesn't own the property upstairs - only the property we rent. However Sky said they won't connect to an existing dish (wouldn't have expected them to) so looks like we are stuck with Virgin or Virgin. This is a real shame because after having Sky + - I'm not sure how we'll cope without it!!! And we certainly can't afford to pay £75 and £5 a month for a box just for the privilidge!

a dish doesn't have to be on the wall of a house.

Friend was refused permission to put a dish on the house wall because they lived in a place that did not allow it. So they put it on the side of their shed. Within a day they were told to take it down by the landlord, not a private landlord.

Make me, he said. It is still there 6 months later.

vague so that he cannot be identified
