    I have today spoken to "Customer Relations" and feel mildly placated. I have a £20 goodwill credit on my account, a technician has been booked for next Weds, and in the meantime the "broadband expert" will be phoning me on Monday to see whether he can resolve it without the need for the technician. That phone call was just so much easier and I was actually listened to. How hard would it be to make all helpline staff so obliging!

    Fingers crossed for next week!

    I worked on a Broadband Helpdesk for 7 years (I won't say who's, but it was a Blue Chip Company). I also worked on Second Line. The problem is that you have people phoning who genuinely haven't got a clue when it comes to the Internet. Then you get those who 'think' they know what they are talking about, but also struggle with the technical aspect of the beast.

    My first feeling is that most likely it be the modem. I say most likely. You are correct in saying that if you have removed the coaxial cable and you are getting a 192, that the modem is talking to the pc. However when you reconnect you get a 169ip. Quite frankly this could be that your modem is requesting an IP address but not being given one (second line can check if the request is being made) or the modem has had enough turkey this year and frankly has given up the ghost (but you have had it replaced already). However it could also be that your pc is communicating with the modem through TCP, but is simply not requesting the correct information (hence pc issue - trying another pc will rule this one out).

    It really can be burn out time on these lines. Hence the reason I left and am now working in IT as self employed. The amount of people blaming the supplier when they have all kinds of cr*p networks (wireless and wired) at home is alarming.

    But we must remember the customer is always right (on the phone anyway) - until you have time to have a chat with your mates, and swap stories!!!

    Some would say it is;

    Try looking it up in a dictionary.

    The word you are looking for is fettle.

    OMG blame it on sleep deprivation - I'd been up about 30 hours when I posted and clearly had taken leave of my senses. I've had a little sleep now so hopefully the brain cells have realigned into their proper order ;)

    (Still not got a Virgin connection though!)

    I'm back, I'm baaaaaaaaack! clap.gif

    Despite heavy snow, the new router arrived early this morning via special delivery, and then Steve, the lovely lovely broadband expert from near Middlesborough called me andwe got that set up - eventually, not without issues at first, but all sorted. But then the modem still wouldn't connect to the internet. We did some stuff, then some more stuff. Then he told me I'd need to ring tech support and I told him I couldn't ring the overseas support who would only tell me to turn the modem and of a few times, so he said he'd call me back. Then he called me back and said there appears to be some IT issues there and my new (xmas eve, you need to keep up with what's new LOL!) modem wasn't being recognised by the system. So did I still have the old one? And thank god I do, so we plugged that back in and like a pheonix from the ashes, the internet appeared before me! (which means the modem was fine all along rolleyes.gif )

    So I am to receive another new modem, since mine is an OAP, which is to be kept in reserve for when a time may come that I need it. Because right now, it ain't broke!

    I couldn't tell you what the problem turned out to be in the first place, that is forever going to be a mystery to me. But right now, my front room resembles a tech grave yard with cables and modems and routers all over the show!

    Thanks for the support and hand holding I have received here cheers.gif
