HTC Hero problem?

I've just started using my new Hero and on looking at my address book it's absolutely crammed with e-mail addresses, sim contacts as well as the regular phone contacts. I've deleted about 500 irrelevant contacts that I have no idea how they got there and it's still an unusable mess!

the phonebook lists:
your call history
then a short list of some A-Z contacts
then a massive list of contacts, sim contacts and e-mail addresses meaning it takes hours to find the contact you want

I called the network and all they could suggest was grouping the contacts...

The phone comes with literally no manual and it's confusing the hell out of me, I paid for the handset on upgrade and I'm a little worried I've made a mistake...

PLEASE HELP!

Can you not search the contacts? Or maybe download a manual from HTC.com
  • are you using gmail/googlemail?

if so, it syncs all addresses in your online contacts. by this i mean not just the contacts that you have manually put in, but anyone you've emailed or received an email from.

yes I've synced with gmail and deleted about 500 email contacts. The issue is more with mutliple contacts under the same number for the same person and a completely unorganized list. I've been told not to delete sim contacts so I'm left with at least two if not more contacts for every single person and it's just not practical (or like any phone i've ever used be it brick or smartphone...)

I was really looking forward to this phone but its so hard to work out and this contact list issue is a major problem...

I'm not sure whether it's more trouble than it's worth

CAN ANY HERO USERS PLEASE HELP AND RE-ASSURE ME!!

Actually Its mixing up with gmail contacts which you have emailed and contacts in your email, the best thing is to just create a fresh gmail account and try sync your contacts with gmail, its really very confusing for me as well when i was doing it myself,

In peeps-> menu-> view, you will find three options.

    Google
    Phone
    Sim

Where exactly your contacts were saved before ?? was it in your sim card? To sync contacts to your gmail account, you have to copy all numbers to GOOGLE option and delete it from PHONE.MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THAT ITS COPIED before deleting it. Tick the GOOGLE in contact source and untick PHONE , SIM and then sync to gmail,if you have less than 200 contacts then copy those numbers onto your sim card as a backup as u might sometimes need to change sim

I had htc magic and it was very smooth in it but hero is very complicated, and one more thing i noticed that when you copy contacts it will still show 0 contacts, so restart your phone to refresh it..

FYI there should be a user manual on the MicroSD card - at least there is on my T-Mobile G2.

I had the same issues with my Hero and a very untidy contact list full of entries for Bob home, Bob mobile, Bob work etc.

Google contacts work best on the Hero and it is not possible to convert sim contacts to Google ones so...

The only real solution is to log onto gmail, move your contacts there and tidy up your contact list so each contact has one entry listing all his contact numbers and email addresses.

As you do this mark frequently called friends as "starred in android ". Once this is done and the phone has synced, add the HTC People widget to quickly scan through these favourites..

Finally, as secret msg has said choose the view option to show only the Google contacts where the are duplicates so the full list is a bit tidier too.
