Can the council request your bank statements for past 6months (discretionary housing)

  • Its not ''extra income'',
it was money that was owed to me from previous wages/tax rebate for the overpayment of tax that id made due to being on higher tax band by accident.

Its annoying that i cant claim back all the money i paid in tax this year till 4th April though, since ive earnt just under £6,000 through paye,
and so am entitled to a fall rebate of abit over £1,000.

Will that actually count against me though if the council can see that sorta stuff when re-assessing my discretionary housing benefit renewal??

    yes.......

How long do you have left on your lease? What do you intend to do if they stop your DHP?

Could leave at anytime now provided i gave 2months notice.

And if i cant get my dhps renewed in march il be sorta ok still,
since il be able to get the £1,000 tax rebate of all the tax ive paid this year,
and so i will have to use that as 10months worth of dhp for myself.

I will be very annoyed if i have to do that though, as that money is meant to be for an xps 16 laptop which i seriously seriously need,
as my current 1 is now 3years old but due to dell's stupid designing i cant unscrew the back of it to clean teh dust of the internal cooling-fan,
and so the laptop overheats after about 2hours use and makes my legs too hot!!

    Ok,
now imagine they said that from next week you will only get 1/2 that rate of housing benefit,
and they will cut 1/3 off your jsa.

How easy would you then find it to pay your rent when you only get half the 'normal rate'??

Since for people like me who are under 25 we have the same living costs that any single over 25year old has,
but for us we only get 1/2 the rate of your (the) ''normal standard'' hb amount.

    [STRIKE]£128.60[/STRIKE] £101.90 JSA for single under 25
[STRIKE]£182.30[/STRIKE] £142.00 LHA for a bedsit in my area. Not quite half but hey ho.

I'll survive as bedsits in my area really are only £60 per week and as I can keep the difference I don't think i would be any worse off and the bills are shared therefore lower in a bedsit rather than in my house.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Apologies, I didn't mean large amounts I meant lets say £20 on a restaurant meal for two. Yes JSA can be spent on anything but any moneysaver would say that as i'm not working i've got plenty of time to purchase ingredients and make a meal at home.

    Merry Xmas...

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like I was on my high horse! :o I see what you mean with small amounts, that's perfectly acceptable :)

    Merry Christmas to you too!!!

When you get your tax rebate, you will almost certainly lose DHP. If you don't, you'll have a big back payment. But you are presuming the benefits agency don't find out, or talk to the tax people. Remember that it only takes a letter!

I'd make an appointment with a benefits advisor and tell them about your living arrangements and income. They might not take as much as you think, and at least right now you have a supportive family, and don't owe a huge backpayment or have a fraud conviction!

You could try using the laptop on a table or desk!

In this weather, I'd think that having a laptop that also warms your legs could be seen as a bonus - very MSE!

I dont have a table or a desk though.

And its not just the heating thats a problem, cos its old its kinda slow now, and especially cos of the overheating that slows it down too.

Lol That is true actually, since it is quite nice for the 1st 45mins while it starts warming up,
but after that it gets too hot and made red marks on my thighs which are a nightmare!:(
