Norwich & Peterborough.

Options
I applied for Gold current account with Norwich & Peterborough and was successful. Today i got a letter asking me for copies of 2 forms of ID which i already photocopied so thats ok,, but they say on the leaflet that all copies MUST be certified by a Dr, Banker, Accountant, Church Leader, etc, etc,,, and they must sign thier name, address, qualifications, phone number, title, etc on the back.

isn''t that a bit oTT ? I have never been expected to do that by any financial insitution before and don't understand why they are so over the top and would expect me to make appointments with a Dr or Bank manager who probably wont sign it anyway. What about the fee they will charge me if they did sign it?? Does this seem a bit too much just for a crappy bog standard account?

Has anyone else applied and had to do this with photocopies , or should i just send the copies without authentication from a professional? I have never even heard of having to go to all this trouble just for such a simple account that anyone can apply for.

  • Bank will do it. No need for an appointment.

Yes but is it really necessary? Just for a crappy basic account? I never been asked by any bank or building society ever to get photocopies signed like that. Has anyone else here applied for the same account? Did you need to mess about getting documents signed or did you just send them without it?

If you don't like the rules they have stipulated then take your business elsewhere.

If you don't like the question then take your replies elsewhere you sanctimonious git.

I am asking a question to people who have applied for this account because it is unusual & as i said before i have never been asked by any financial institution to get photocopies signed by other professionals.

I have not at any point said that i don't like the rules, i have simply asked if anyone else has applied for this account & did they just send in documents without getting them signed?

Now if you have not applied for this account & don't know the answer to that simple question pehaps you could politely butt out & keep your un called for comments to yourself?
  • re ID for ANY transaction these days seems to have got slightly silly. Trying to sell a house for example - the solicitor and estate agent wanted evidence of ID even though I have known the solicitor for years, she accepted photocopies with endorsement, the estate agent wanted similar - I was tempted to ask him for ID too!!!

To open any account - even for a child seems to need multiple ID, only way I got round it was to TAKE said child to my own bank (not branch) and I think all they needed was the passport - even though we took birth cert, letter showing his address (from House of commons ha ha).

Answer is yes they want the ID for just about anything - makes me wary of closing an account as they are such a palaver to open

Thank you very much for actually spending time answering my question & not just posting 'pointed' remarks at me. Merry Christmas. ;):D

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't UK birth and death certificates even say that they're not evidence of identity on them? I don't have one to check.

Other than that, there's a reason they ask for certified copies. They have a duty and obligation to ensure that you are who you say you are. Photocopies are often used by fraudsters as it's an easy way to hide blemishes that might otherwise be evident on fake ID.

In the bigger picture, banks have a legal duty post 9/11 to ensure they know who they're providing facilities to. You might see it as just a basic account, but it could be another layer to disguise the source and destination of funds, designed to throw a forensic accountant off. Sounds dramatic, but still very possible.

Are the methods used always effective? No, not by a long shot. Is it better than nothing? Yes.

I recall sending my driving licence and passport to them as I couldn't be **sed to go and get copies made and signed. They were returned within five days without a hitch.

I understand the legal duties banks have, what i don't understand however is why only one financial institution would want me to provide documents signed by another individual, when every other bank i have applied for has never requested that i should get the same documents signed by a 3rd party.

Take today for example, i recieved a letter from Halifax asking me to go into my local branch with 2 forms of ID in order to authenticate my new current account, then on going into the branch i am told that i have already been fully identified & did not even need to take any ID into the local branch.

They bank told me i did need to provide ID in writing, when they didn't even need it, so are N&P the same?

That's the point i am getting at here, i have never been asked to do this before by any financial institution which is why i find it a bit unusual & i just want to establish whether anyone else has applied for the current gold account at N&P, and if they just sent the ducuments as they were.
