Just to add, I tuck my sheets by heaving one corner of the mattress with both hands (using power/ momentum) and then catching it on my knee, placing my bare foot on the bed base. I then have both hands free to tuck and the weight of the mattress is supported. Would that work for you?

That sounds ideal FireFox. Can you come round once a week? :D

I'll investigate a bit further, check out queen size bedding, etc. I think the Viyella ones were 140cm wide, I've tried to find other suppliers besides QVC but only found fancy feminine ones which OH probably wont want. Maybe I'll contact QVC and see if they're going to have matching flat sheets to go with the plainer fitted ones.

Thanks all for your comments. Merry Christmas to everyone, seeing as it's almost here!

Well since you live "where the mountains come down to the sea" I would seriously consider becoming your lady-what-does: gotta beat city living, and I will be unemployed come February ... don't suppose you need a cat too?

Why not take a look at the Ikea ones. Check the sizes first though. A normal double Ikea matress is 200 x 140 so it should fit in theory.

Thanks for that Ignite. Their website says fits 140cm wide and with a mattress depth of 25cm so that could be the answer. Will try and get to a store and check out the quality.

    Hi again Toms Mum.

I was given a fitted sheet as a gift a few years ago. I'm not sure what the material was called, but it was similar to flanlett. It is so stretchy that you can even fit it on the mattress the wrong way around.

Hello Tim, I wondered if you'd find this thread! I think maybe your stretchy sheet was stretch jersey or something similar.

I want something really nice to go with the really nice bed! I'm waiting to see if it's possible to get plain flat Viyella to match the fitted ones at QVC, I can try them and send back if not a good fit. Can't think of anywhere else I can try them out and return. I might also send for their flannelette to try, seems the only way not to waste money on something that might not fit property. I can't get out to any shops at the moment to ask them (nicely) to unpack some and measure for me.

By the way, seeing as you have the same bed - does yours measure 140cm wide (that's the latex, I think the MF is 1cm less)?

Bet you wish you hadn't seen this thread now :D.
  • These people do made to measure, I had some done for a bed settee as it was a funny size.

    Mine is actually 139cm.

The problem is that upholstery isn't precision engineering. There are a lot of fillings that have to be packed tight into the mattress, and the fabric is guided into the sewing machine (on a track that goes around the mattress) by hand. So it all depends on exactly how tight the operator pulls the fabric into the machine.

I realised there'd be some small variations with it being hand made. I'll continue with my quest to find the perfect sheet now I've got the perfect bed!
